Anyone else printing smaller?
I generally prefer relatively small photographic prints, partly because my favourite way to look at photographs has always been to sit down with a book. Anyhow my own prints have always been around 8x10 from 4x5 film and 5x7 from 35mm. Lately however I’ve started to enjoy making smaller prints from 4x5 negatives, some on 5x7 paper.
Anyone else find themselves going smaller?
I imagine this is less viable for people trying to sell/show but I’ve never tried any of that.
Re: Anyone else printing smaller?
I like to make 4x5 contact prints.
Re: Anyone else printing smaller?
I only contact print -- 6cmx6cm to 11"x14"
Re: Anyone else printing smaller?
I make 4x5 to 4x6 proof prints from any film formats from 135 to 4x5 and love them.
Quite a few just "shine" at such smaller size compared to even 8x10.
Re: Anyone else printing smaller?
I'm generally printing on 8x10 paper, regardless of the original film format. In theory I designed my darkroom to do up to 16x20, but I've never printed larger than 11x14, and that is rare. For negs bigger than 4x5, I have no choice but contact printing.
I find the smaller prints much easier to deal with for storage, viewing hand-held, and a much better size to give to friends.

I make and sell Box Sets - usually the images are about 7 x 9 sitting in a 12 x 12 matt. I find collectors love the box set idea, in my city people have less and less wall space and this box set sits on a table or book shelf.

Fave print size, 5x7 or 13x18cm B&W negative to 10x14 print on 16x20 four ply mat board.\
Been done the Hassy 6x6 or 6x7 or 6x9 film negatives to 8x10_ish and larger prints which are ok, but does not have the B&W print image quality of 5x7 to 10x14 print.
Once past this print size, print making often gets " interesting " in various ways.
Or 8x10 contact print on AZO paper or ... works good.
Whopper prints like 30x40 and larger are often initially Impressive-Imposing, except not always fitting for every image.

Yup!
For me silver gelatin works best as jewels, not posters.

Cool idea, Bob!
