Many thanks, Bob! Any idea where I might source an odd part or two such as the rangefinder rubber eye piece?

In the USA Linhof service is Nippon Photo Clinic in NYC.

A question for Bob (or someone else) if you don't mind - I'm trying to confirm the model for a Linhof with the Serial #79232. The Linhof I think is a Super Technika V, but I'm lost on this. Thanks!

At least that's what's on the lens.

Also, was there originally a ground glass for this version?
Also is a manual available somewhere?

Sorry, don't have that number listed or a number near that. Are you sure it is a III and not a war time or pre-war model? If it is it would have RBP engaved on the back rather then DBP.

Deutsche Rechtspartei (DRP)

This is a camera made before the III either during WW II or prior to the war. There are no Linhof serial number records prior to the introduction of the III in 1946.

So you have a II or earlier.

As long as the Reich indication is stamped on the back it can not be a III.

The Technika Standard and the Medezin were both available in 1936. The Standard had no tilt/swing frame and the Medezin did. The Technika Patent of 1934 was for the swing/tilt frame invented by Nikolaus Karpf. So yes, Linhof Technika cameras had a swing/tilt frame before WW II and all of the Technika Standard and Medezin models had a rear tilting front lens standard.

Missed this question, sorry. The Medezin had a rangefinder on the later models made during the war. The last versions of the Medezin and the first models of the III were essentially the same except for the washable finish on the Medezin.

Its very intersting !!! Had you some information from what time the rangefinder with the lens curves was availible ?

I found this on the site cameraquest.com and there is a number block that say its a Super Technika III in Version 1 , its all very confusing to me :-(

There are FIVE Tech III's, ALL called the Tech III! With the rangefinder, it's a Super Technika, without RF it's a Technika -- or so say the old Linhof manuals, so I pass on their terminology. Serial #'s are approximate and may not be accurate because factory records were not always accurate, according to Bob Solomon of HP marketing, the US importer of Linhof.

Version 1 of 1946 It introduced the pronounced "U" shaped front standard. RF housing is square with no flash bracket. Square Body design. Serial #'s 2021 to 2555, and 22556 to 23880.
Version 2 of 1950 Flash bracket introduced on RF housing. RF housing now angled rather than squared design. Body still square. Serial #'s started 30001.
Version 3 of 1951 Body now has curved edges. Ending Serial # 37104.
Version 4 of 1953 Knob locks for back movements are now located on top of camera. Introduced drop bed. From Serial # 50,0001.
Version 5 of 1955 Much stronger body design. Front door is no longer flat, but rather a reinforced angular design. Now the camera has RF focusing wheels on both sides. Essentially this version amounts to a type IV body with III type front movements. Ending serial # 62235. Introduced the international or Graflok back which could be retrofitted to earlier cameras. SEE PICS

I have no info on specifically when they started with cammed lenses.

There are errors on the Camera Quest site. I think they had been trying to use my serial number records which I have from the factory. I can not vouch for their records but that DRP engraved on the back of your camera is a clear sign that the camera was not made after the war. And the III was introduced after the war. So their listing the number as a III can not be correct.

That is a 1981/2 Technorama 617.

There was a ground glass for the original T617 that mounted into the middle accessory shoe. There are no manuals for this model but you may be able to download the current T617 SIII manual from the Linhof web site.

Hi Bob,

Ok, quick question. Any ideas about this one?

79058.

Just bought it for school and I'm trying to find out as much about it as I can.

It only has one Cam f=150mm Serial no.: 8000905 so I think I'll most likely be having to use bellows extension factors for the rest of the lenses, which might not be a bad thing. Eventually I'll get myself into a wooden field, but for now I think this will be great practice in the mean time.

Thanks a ton in advance.

You have a 1964 Super Technika V. You need a cam for each lens, cut to match the lens by serial number, to have accurate focusing. Precision Camera in Niles, IL does the camming in the USA.

The serial number on your cam must match the serial number of your lens for it to work properly.

1957.

Cams for a IV must be matched to both the camera body and the specific lens so you would have to send both the body nd the lens to a Linhof service center to be matched and cut. If you want to use the lens converted with a cam then you would need a secoThe service center will also have eye pieces but you will have to check with them if a current one will fit that old of a camera. It is probably also time for a complete CLA on the body and that lens.

I have what is supposed to be a Linhof Technika III It looks to be different from what others have called a III.

The focussing hood is arranged differently from what I have seen on other IIIs. There is just a metal door above the GG which is hinged at the top and has a a latch at the bottom rather than the focussing panel which opens like a door and is removable. The hinge for this door is fastened by screws. The other thing that eels different is that there is evidence that this camera once had a Kalart rangefinder attached. The hole in the side of the camera and the screw hole match what a Kalart would use. I have a Kalart adjustment manual and, in the manual, it gives instructions on adjusting the Kalart when it is connected to the Linhof III. It uses a different connection to the focussing bed than when the Kalart is used on a Speed/Crown Graphic.

The knobs for the back movements are on the sides of the camera and "DRP Made in Germany DRGM" is engraved on the top of the rotating back plate.

I have what I think is a four numbered SN: 5815 This is located on the inside of the front door under the focussing bed just underneath the Linhof script The front door is also flat with the focussing knob/lock know sticking through and a trip mount.

The camera uses Linhof III lens boards and, when I purchased a replacement GG, it needed to specifically be for the III because the hole is a little bit smaller than other Technikas.

Could this be something different, like a Standard or Press?

And, while we ae here, I have what I think is a Linhof Standard 5x7 camera. It does not have movement on the back other than it rotates. It did not have a complete back on it when I got it and I am using a B&J wooden 5x7 back. I cannot find a serial number anywhere on the camera and the Linhof script is no where to be found. The clip that holds the front door shut has the Linhof name engraved on it but in regular letters, not script. It uses a lens board which is the same height as that of the III but is about a half inch narrower

Both of these cameras are kind of beat up and were that way when I got them. However, they both seem to work well and they will do the job for now.

Any ideas about these cameras? Thanks for looking on the list for us curious folk, Bob.

5815 is from the first series of the III made from 1946 to 54. Yours would be about 1948 or 49. It is a III.

No, there was never a 57 Standard. But there were the war time and pre-war models, there are no serial number records for those. And the Technika II 5x7 was made after the war from 1946 to 1950, so you might have one of those.

I found some information at http://www.cameraeccentric.com/html/info/linhof_1.html that suggests that my 5x7 is from 1937

The first picture is of the camera open from the front and the second picture is from the back and shows the GG back and a holder. It has back movements so it is not the same camera. A couple of the single sided holders came with my camera but I did not get a GG back with it, hence, replacing it with a B&J wooden 5x7 back.

Probably. Since you did not indicate a size or model I went through all of the Linhof 23, 45, 57, 810 and special cameras that were made from 1946 to a few years ago and can not find any camera near that number. Again, if the initials RDP are on the camera, usually on the back of the camera by the top housing for the gg, it is pre 1946.

Thanks Bob. Does the B in the serial number have any significance?

They started prefacing serial numbers with a letter in the 90s. Probably because they have been making cameras for so long that it gave them more numbers to use without making longer numbers.

Bob - is there a reason why these serial numbers couldn't be listed somewhere on line, giving year and model number?

We are now up to page 136, and whilst your attention and responses are much appreciated, there must be a smarter way of identifying Linhofs?

Yes, second digit in the body serial number is definitely an 8.

I gather that the 'B' at the end of the serial number indicates a body set up for the 53 mm Biogon.

This is an original complete outfit with the cam bearing the three lens serials. Based on the Zeiss serial numbers, I'm guessing we're around 1954-55, but I'm particularly interested to get an accurate body date.

Bob, thank you for the quick response. I do have one more question: I noticed that this Linhof has two removable camera backs - one fits 4x5 sheet holders and the other fits 2.25 x 3.25. Did these both come with the original camera, or is one of them an accessory that was purchased at a later date? If so, which one? Thanks again.

Hello Bob,

I have the possibility to buy an 13 X 18 technika wich has the serial 3340.
Would this be a first gen technika or a second generation?
Would the camera have a rotating back? Or a fixed one?

This would be my first large format camera (except the diy LF pinhole camera's) i'm using.
The interest in this model is because of the lighter weight (+_3,3kg) than the later gen technika's.
Would like to use a "simple" camera in the field. (architecture & landscape, some portraits).
Am i missing something with an old technika?
I know the back doesn't take modern dds holders, but i suppose i can fabricate something/search a newer technika back to make this possible.

Thanks in advance,

Adam

Adam

1948.

Yes, it is lighter because it is simpler. The back, as you mentioned, the amount of movements and the lack of forward front tilts help make it lighter. Also, no repair parts are av.ilable/

Hi Bob,

Me again. I'm trying to find a manual for the camera, but can't seem to find one? None of the cameras seem to match the build of the one I have. This one has a total of three notches for dropping the focus bed and has no notches along the rail for setting the infinity points. Any thoughts?

Thanks again!

Sounds like a Master Technica 3000 or an earlier version with the modification to the 3000 bed. Serial number is on the accessory shoe. Post a picture of the camera showing the right side of the camera.

I have no record for that number. Where did you find the number? What size Linhof is it? A picture would help.

I'm looking at a Linhof camera with 2 lenses at a local camera store in Regina SK. They tell me it is a Tech IV, but I'm trying to make sure. Is there any way to tell the difference between a Tech IV and a Tech III?

Linhof Camera Body #2285301
Zeiss Planar 135mm F3.5 #2112636
Zeiss Brogon? 75mm F4.5 #3523567

The kit also has two tripods, some 4x5 holders, a 120 roll back and some misc filters as stuff. Any adivice?

Yes there is, but your camera's serial number does not belong to any Linhof camera from the III, IV or V era. Where are you seeing that number?

A III takes a different dimension lens board then all later Technikas and the III front standard can not tilt forward like all later Technika cameras can. Lastly the IV was not finished in black material.

1954 first production series.

Thank you very much... these days they obviously did not have just in time delivery for lenses and shutters...

If the owner got his price list with the camera, he eventually bought it 1955 (or for Xmas 1954) in Freudenstadt (black forest)

btw, these days in germany the cameras were only called "Technika" (nor super for the rangefinder)

Technika 6x9 with rangefinder 980 DM
Without rangefinder 598 DM
company offered that you can get a rangefinder added later for the price difference
all lenese that were bought with the camera or later were cammed for free...

I believe it is an early Super Technika V since it has the plastic lever for rise and fall of lens.

Many thanks Bob, my customer will be over the moon to know the camera is older than he is.
Also, the Roll Back and the lenses, my customer informs me the kit is one that was put together from several different kits, so he is curious about the lenses and roll back to see what years they were produced and how much the kit varies in age.

Bob, I have another Technika II I need a date for. There is no serial number on the camera. The only markings are "D.R.P. ang" and "D.R.G.M.ang." The lens is a 13.5cm Zeiss Jena # 1189554 and looks to be original to the camera. The serial number on the lens dates the lens to 1930, so I'm guessing the camera is 1930?

Thanks.
