Linhof publishes The Linhof Camera Story which is in English and German. That is probably the best. The current edition is by Peter Bauernschmid and Gerty Schlegel. Baurenschmid is the owner of Linhof and Schlegel was a longtime Linhof employee. Kerkmann is Nicholas Karpf's widow and was the factory owner after Karpf died and until Baurenschmid bought the factory. The version of the book that you listed is the first edition. The version I listed is the second and later edition.
So far I had a chance to get the 1st edition.
It is nowhere close in details as "Hasselblad compedium" by R.Nordin or "Rollei Report" by C.Prochnov but it is useful. I would recommend it to anyone who like me has nothing but random Linhof ADs. In the book there is no serial ## info, no accessory description, but the main Linhof cameras are listed (with photos), tech.specs are given, some differences are emphasized. Plus some historical information about Linhof company and few anecdotes.. -- Not bad for a start!
I'll get the last edition if there will be chance.

Hi Bob,

what about 9821381 (Technikardan)?

Thanks! for that service.

The TK series is too new and we don't track them. The original TK was made from 1985 to 1992. The TK S has been avaible since.

Sorry.
in my mind, LT stands for Linhof Technika (folding 4x5).

Thanks.

And Linhof did make a Kardan LT. It used the Kardan profile monorail and the standards from the TK. Very, very short production life however.

To most easily answer these questions we need the common name and the size of the camera.

Sorry for the ambiguous question.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, somebody bought the set quickly and I think I missed a good bargain :

Technika IV
+ APO-Lanthar 1:4,5 / 150 (which seems to be well sought)
+ Componon 1:5,6 / 80 (is it an enlarger lens ?)
+ Symmar 1:5,6 / 210
+ Angulon 1:6,8/90
+ Horseman rollfilm 6 x 6
+ 4 double film holders

For under 1000 $ !

So bad...

Does Linhof produce a part that I can add the cold shoe back to the hole that EMS was once mounted?

The 2000 was introduced in 1995 and discontinued and replaced by the current Master Technika 3000 4 or so years ago. The EMS did not function as advertised and was recalled in 1998. So your camera was made between 1995 and 1998 if it ever had the EMS on it.

You would have to call service regarding parts. In the USA they can be reached at 252 652-4401.

We refunded the money they paid. So did any other Linhof distributors. In the USA 5 were sold and one person did not return her module.
Since it had to be programmed on a Linhof unique computer program it is totally useless as the computer and program were trashed years ago.

If only 5 EMS units were sold in the States, there should not be more than 30 units sold worldwide with the most generous guess. It is intersting to know what collector would pay for her could be only surviving unit. I know it does not work, but like those error stamp, we never know if she made a good investment decision. LOL

Humm. Where is the serial number on a Tech III? I don't have cams. The number on the bed is 5413. Is that the serial number? Something I found online puts that as the first version of 1946 before the second version of 1950.

Curioser and curioser. The same link said the 55 design had an reinforced angular rather than flat front door, and focusing knobs on both sides. Mine definitely has a focus knob only on one side.

Is this guy just wrong about everything?

Here's the bed with the serial number and single focus wheel.

Most of what he wrote is accurate. He left out the entire Medzin series made durin WWII which is what the III evolved from and the 3000 is the latest version and has been for a few years.
A III is just that, a III. Linhof doesn't break them down into sub versions in the serial Buber listings, they are all just IIIs. Just like the Master Technika Classic is virtual the same camer today as it was in 1972 but over that time knobs have changed, the position of the knobs have changed, the cable release body mount has disappeared. The back removal system has changed and the, decades later. Changed back.. But the camera is still a Master Technika and has had the same serial number since it was introduced.
That is where your confusion comes in. You have a III the subdivisions of the III are from users definitions not from the factory designations. To the factory or us you have an older one or a newer one but they are all III models and those camera did keep evolving until the evolved so far that they became a new model, the IV.

If you want the factory history of most Linhof cameras then look for the 2nd edition of the Linhof camera storyg book that is published by Linhof and co authored by the owner Peter Baurenschmid.

Hello all...after many years I've decided to sell my Linhoff 4 x5. I'm not looking to get rich, but I also do not want to just "give it away." I came across this site and have seen that Bob Salomon is the resident expert on Linhoff by serial number...so Bob (and others) any info you could share would be greatly appreciated.

Linhoff Karden Color 45s serial #5741660

Lens: Schneider-kreuznach 1:5,6/150

Kodak Ektar f7.7/203mm
Kodak Ektar f6.3/100mm

I bought all of this equipment in 1978 or 1979 (thought I would be going to Art Center, but that never happened.) The equipment is in a oversized custom anvil case and in excellent condition. I used the camera maybe 6 times and everything still seems to be in perfect working order....bellows are in great condition too. What is the value of this equipment and where would anyone recommend I go to sell it? Thanks in advance for any/all info. Roy

Hello and good evening! I am hoping I can get some more information about my Technika which I just bought today. Based upon photos and reading all the descriptions I believe I have one of the last model III's made. Has no rangefinder. Not sure if this is the serial number but on the shoe on the top of the camera is a number 15005. This is not like the usual Tech III's, it has an angled front door, has a drop bed, it has what appears to be Tech III front movements but everything else indicates Tech IV in styling. The rear standard movement lockdown knobs are on the top of the camera. By every description it appears to be this camera: http://www.cameraquest.com/tech3pic.htm which on that site is described as Tech III Type 5. But this number above seems to be way off from all the serial numbers that are described elsewhere. Perhaps there are two serial number ranges, one for Techs with no rangefinder and one for those with a rangefinder? Any extra information would be wonderful to have.

Hi Bob - I need your help. I ordered from the B-H used store a 'Linhof Master Technika Black Edition kit with Linhof Schneider Symmar-S 180 / 5.6'. This item is rated a 9/10 by B-H and costs USD 3,300. The camera I received today is a chrome version with the s/n 314368 on the inner side of the dropbed and the s/n 6415024 on the hotshoe. It has the inscriptions D.B.P and West Germany on the left side and right side on the top. The groundglass, dirty and sticky, does not have centimeter grid; it is plain with two frames (56x72 and 9x12). There are no clips to hold a fresnel screen. The locking knobs and focus knobs are black on the side area and silver on the face area. The camera seems to be a Technika V with black leather. It is quite old and has several scratches and there is a permanent mark on the front lens. Could it be a Technika V ? Can one tell from the serial numbers ? Thank you.

A Master has the lift up top flap the V does not.

6415024 is a 1973 Master Technika from the first series but it is on the shoe which can be unscrewed and moved from one camera to another.

I don't know what the other number would be. That is not where Linhof engaves the serial number.

Many older cameras did not come with a grid GG and you described a screen that was supplied on many cameras.

Fresnel clips were not supplied on older models and were available as an accessory. You can order them today, along with the required longer screws, from marflex at 252 652-4401. They can also supply the current gg.

No and there are big differences between a IV and a Master, not the least is that repair parts are no longer available foe some IV cameras. The newest IV was made in May of 63 and the oldest Master was made in September of 72.

Eliminate surprises, get the entire number.

The cam has to be ground for the specific lens by serial number. So Marflex will need the lens. If you send them the camera they will also install the infinity stops and the focusing scale for the same price.

Master and V cammed lenses are interchangeable for the ground lens between the Master and the V. They will also fit the IV but will not be accurate unless Marflex zeroes the GG to match the position of the gg on the V and the Master. It also would not work on other IV models unless those cameras are also zeroed by the service center. Master and V models all have a zeroed gg back.

Good Morning Bob,

The first technika (39011) is a 2x3 (or 6x9) and not a 5x7 (or 13x18).

Will the different size change the production date?

When you say that you need the model of the camera with its number,
you mean the serial numbers are not exclusive and can be doubles?

For the Kardan questions:
I've got one that actually is 4x5 and has number 3611670 and another one
that actually is 5x7 and has number 3611522.
Sorry to bother you as a silly but : How you find out the serial numbers?

I have to check serial numbers on 5 different files when one asks. There is a file for:
23 cameras
45 camers
57 cameras,
810 cameras
Special cameras

Whe one gives me a number without the type of camera I have to start searching these five files till I find the nmber and yes, some numbers are duplicated on cameras of different sizes. So the size and the number at the same time makes things easier.
Also, many of the numbers are on the accessory shoe which is removable on some models so it can be changed from camera to camera by a seller or user. Like a Sinar with the number on the rail clamp.

For the Kardan questions:

3611670 is a 1968 B
3611522 is also a 45 B from 1968 so somone probably converted it to a 57 after they bought it by changing the back.

That is the number from a 57 Technika, not a 23 Technika. If your camera is not a 57 then someone has switched numbers.

I have no idea when this site was started.

A quick question for Bob, I have ordered a Rodenstock apo-sironar N 150mm from HP Marketing for my MT 2000. The intent is to avoid removing the lens when closing the camera. In this case the lens needs to be mounted on a recessed lensboard doesn't it ?

Thank you Bob. B-H has an older 001016 board, can it serve the same purpose (copal 0 lens) ? What are the differences wrt 001015 ?

The 001015 Comfort is for your lens in Copal shutter. It has the aperture selector and the aperture scale on the face of the board as well as the press focus lever and the indicator for the press focus. There is no reason to reach into the recess to adjust the controls. In addition it has the improved cable release quick socket system that no longer uses wires and the recess depth overall is different.

The 001016 has the old bent wire release system, does not move the controls or the scale to the front of the board and is a different depth.

Sorry, I don't track the recent models so I can't give you actual production dates for a camera as recent as the 2000. There is no other instructions other then the complete Master Technika book and the 2000 addenda book.

There would be no way to tell about the fresnel without actually seeing it and comparing to a current one. And even then, it could be an older Linhof fresnel.

Sorry, I don't show that serial number. Any Linhof service center can fix the camera.

The Linhof family has had no connection with the factory since Valentin Linhof died many decades ago. The factory was then owned by Nicholas Karpf and then by his wife. His wifr sold the factory to the present owner about 10 years ago.

Valentin dies well before WW II, Nicholas Karpf died in the 70s during Photokina.

Can't comment on any family relationships. Do know that Nicholas Linhof died in 1929 and Karpf joined Linhof as an engineer in 1933 and became Managing Director in 1936. Have no idea who was in charge between 1929 and 1936. Karpf died in 1980 and his widow Hidrun Karpk-Kirkmann and Heinz Broeker became joint Managing Directors until Peter Bauernschmid bought the company a little more then a decade ago.

The Linhof literature does not mention any family relationships between Linhof and Karpf but that doesn'y mean that there was no relationship.

Master replaced the V in 1972. Major difference is lift-up flap on top for more movement with short lenses. Your camera is covered in gray while the Master is covered in black, except for some special edition models like the 120th anniversary Master Technika 3000 in Ferrai red leather.

Nope, that's the number on the accessory shoe. And there's no sign whatsoever that any of the three screws fastening the accessory shoe have ever been touched by a screwdriver.

I think there may have been a number sequentially close to this one posted earlier in this thread for which you gave a similar response, but I can't remember which page it's on.

There's a similar camera depicted on page 9 of this thread, identified by its serial as a Tech III, but with tan leather and a single lever for back removal. There's subsequent mention in the thread of a rangefinder-less Technika "Study" camera based on the Tech III/IV 6x9.

The camera I have is like the one depicted, EXCEPT for three notable differences:
1. Mine has no scale to the side of one rail
2. The back release lever on mine is on the opposite side of the camera (same side as the leather grip)
3. Mine has no "ears" (for attaching a strap?) on the sides of the body (above the leather grip on the left side, above the grip mount on the right side)

What is the difference between the Tech IV 6x9 and the "Study" camera based on the Tech IV? Is it only that the "Study" camera lacks a rangefinder?

Hi everybody,
I found a Linhof Technika camera at a charity sell.
I think it is a model III type 4 or five.
Maybe somebody can help me.

The serial number on the accessory shoe is 54271.

It has a rangefinder and a camme (?) for a 135 lens.

The thing is worn looking but all the movements work and the bellow seems fine.

It has no lens and no lens plate.

Does it have any value? Since I found out that lenses are very expensive I think I will never be able to use it, so maybe I will sell it.

I also got a big box full of lenses (big lenses) mounted on square iron boards (16cm x 16 cm) but all the lenses have no shutter so I think they might be large format enlarging lenses. Can one of those be used on the L. T. camera in some way? There are also two smaller lenses, no shutter eighter but much smaller than the others and no board, they are in wooden boxes.
Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Matt

Technika IV 6x9cm

Same camera as Super Technika IV but without optical finder, rangefinder or cam. Instead has frame finder with rear sight. Factory conversion possible to Super Technika IV. (not any longer).

There was also a very early Technika III Study camera (also without rangefinder/viewfinder/cam .

The Technika III 69 looked very much like the IV but it did not have the quick change lever back. If your camera has the latch in each corner to remove the back then you have a III.

Since your serial number is not listed you should send us photos rather then descriptions or send the camera to a Linhof service center who can then determine its official serial number.

"The camera I have is like the one depicted, EXCEPT for three notable differences:

Thanks. Even that bit of info is helpful. Maybe the numbers from a smaller run or two over the years somehow escaped getting archived?

Nope.

The missing numbers are pre WW II and WW II numbers. That could mean that you actually have one of the versions of the Medezin which were made pre WW II and right through the war and became the Technika III. Some of them even looked like a IV. Some of these had a washable cream lacquer finish so it could be used in medical applications and be washed.

Seems to be one of the cameras made between 1937 and 1945, We do not have serial numbers for those but can tell you that they were made in 7 different film sizes: 6x9cm; 8x10.5 cm; 9x12 cm; 10x15 cm; 12x16.5 cm; 13 x 18 cm; and 18 x 24 cm. 6x9cm weight 1.135 kg (2.5 lb) and 18 x 24cm weighed 10.1 kg (22.25lb)!

Many thanks Bob! Nice to know approx when it was made and that Linhof did indeed produce cameras in quarter plate/8x10.5cm format, I don't suppose anyone makes that film size anymore? edit: seems they do http://www.ag-photographic.co.uk/chs100-325x425-quarter-plate-50-sheets-614-p.asp

I have acquired two Color Kardan 8x10 cameras over the years. The first is serial number 469. It has an extra long rail (42", if I recall correctly) and a middle stand (so, it has two bellows). The other is a "normal" sized 8x10, serial number 903.

Any details about these cameras would be greatly appreciated!

469 about 1955. 903 about 1957.

But 469 is a Kardan 810. 903 is a Kardan Color 810. Neither is a Color Kardan. Linhof never made a Color Kardan in any size.

A Super Technika IV early 1963. The last IV was 78886 so yours is close to the end of that model line. 78887 was the first Super technika V in Apr. of 63.

Interesting, thanks, Bob.

It was sold (on ebay) as Tech V. And its got lever on front standard, which was allegedly wasnt there on IV. But it doesnt have removeable accessory shoe bolt thingy ( mentioned http://www.cameraquest.com/techs.htm ) and yet it has lever with plastic tip, which should be there on Tech V.. Guess it could be franken-camera, bolted from IV body and V guts ;)

1962 or 3.

The first V was made in April of 63 (78887). The last IV was made in May of 63 (78886).

So you have one of the last IV models.

I suppose it's a Super Technika V?

Cams must be ground to the specific lens, by serial number, and the dpecific camera by serial number. They are only interchangeable between cameras by adjusting one of the cameras at a service center.

Thanks a lot Bob!
I bought it yesterday and will post some pictures of it the next days.
It looks pretty much like this one:
http://static.photo.net/attachments/bboard/00Q/00QABv-56963584.jpg
So I believe it's a Technika IV as the cam is coupled to the camera (by serial number) and it has a knob to rise the front and no lever (I read somewhere that these are two facts to distinguish a IV from the V).

It came with the three original lenses (100/5.6, 65/8, 180/5.5).
The odd thing is, that it also came with a 6x9 Super Rollex but the groundglas has only markings for 6x7 (solid line) and 2 1/4 x 3 1/4 (dotted line).
I think the last one is for 6,5x9 cutfilm and not for 6x9 rollfilm. The groundglas is only 8cm so 6x9 wouldn't even fit on the groundglas.
Is there any explanation for this? did they also make other groundglas backs?
So the 6x9 Rollex is pretty useless, but I will get and (exclusively use) a 6x7 back anyway.

Hi Bob,

this is the camera in question.
I'm a bit lost in the identification-process:
- Linhof IVs had the rangefinder integrated in the viewfinder on the top
- Linhof Vs had a lever to rise and cams not restricted to the camera body - also I saw some where the top could be opened to have more rise with wideangle lenses
- Studienkameras didn't have a rangefinder at all

best,

daniel

That is a picture of the Super Technika V 23.

You are confusing the 45 and 23 cameras. The 45 model V and later had/have a lever for front rise. The Super Technika V 23 had the knob, just where yours is.

45 Master Technika cameras and the 23 after your camera, the Super Technika V, 23b have the lift-up flap. Yours did not.

Cams are interchangeable on 45 Technika V and Master Technika cameras. Not on 23 models.

But! The drop bed and accessory shoe are different from later V models. I can look at work tomorrow to see if I can narrow it down some more but I can't read the serial number in your picture and if it is the number in your original post it is a Studienkamera accessory shoe design and drop bed design but with the wrong rangefinder.

Like so many others, I wonder about what Linhof model I have and its date of manufacture. I think it is the early V but could be wrong. The serial number is 2121123 and there is a lever to raise and lower the front standard. It has the white plastic grip that moves in and out to select direction of movement. Were there different lever mechanisms for the front standard rise? Thanks Gary

1966. It is from the first production.
All V models have the rise lever. There were different tips on the lever depending on when it was made.

The V series was discontinued in early 1976. It was replaced with the Master Technika which is still made.

I think that the seller is misreading the number. It is probably 267xx not 261xx. That would make it a 1965 Technika V.

There is no other number close to what the seller claims in any format. Remember an English 7 is similar to a German 1 because of the slash in the German 1.

Recently I`ve bought Linhof Technika V SN 2122998. I`m wondering what is the year of production.
Also: it has `weel` for rising the front standard - shouldn`t it be lever? So I`m curious is this mk IV or V. Thanks in advance.

I`m new to this forum and in LF format.
Recently I`ve bought Linhof Technika V SN 2122998. I`m wondering what is the year of production.
Also: it has `weel` for rising the front standard - shouldn`t it be lever? So I`m curious is this mk IV or V. Thanks in advance.

If that is the correct serial number then you have a 1966 Super Technika V. The V has a lever for front rise. If your camera does not have the lever and has the knob behind the front standar then you have a IV and that serial number is not for your camera and was switched by someone.

Thanks Bob.
The knob looks not original. The rest of the camera is fine. Is there easy, cheap way to replace it. Lever is much more comfortable.
Thanks a lot.

The serial seems to be ok. The same is on shoe and on the body underneath the shoe.
Thanks

You would have to ask one of the service centers.

I only have numbers for 23 Linhof cameras made between Oct 1951 and Jan. 1980. That number is not on the list so if it is a black Super Technika V, 23b it is after 1/80.

I have a pretty good idea of it's age (about the same as me) but can you narrow down the date of manufacture of 30899?
