Hey, Bob. I just bought a camera sold as a Tech V, and can't figure out how to rotate the back -- it does not seem to be the required release button. Can you tell me year and make of 2111196 and whether the back is supposed to rotate? Thanks for your help. Bill

1965 V and the back rotates. As it is 55 years old it probably needs a proper service.

Might be a good camera if you let Bill at Precision do a CLA on it. Check with him before returning it.

Hello, I have a Linhof 4x5/9x12 camera serial number 66883. I would like to know what series this one is. It also has the following lenses.. Lin. Tech. Angulon 90 6.8, APO-Lanthar 150 4.5 & Tele-Arton 240 5.5. It was given to me in an old camel leather case made for the camera and it's got the viewfinder and another back. Can someone let me know what I have and the potential worth. Thinking about downgrading to Medium format or trying out this beast. Thanks.

These cameras are often 50+ years old so it is quite possible for parts to have been replaced or interchanged including the shoe with the serial number.
The tan leather indicates a IV or V. The IV had a tan or ivory interior and bed and the V was dark almost black inside. There is also a spot on the body under the leather with the SN engraved.

The current Master Technika was introduced 48 years ago this past September. Virtually all older models are 50 or more years old.

... except for the SN? What do you mean when you say 'spot on the body under the leather with the SN'? Linhof was known to engrave the SN into the camera body beneath one of the leather panels. I saw this with my own Technika IV 4x5 (the panel fell off) and it has been noted by others with other camera models as well. I can not say where to look on a 5x7 Technika nor do I recommend tearing up good leather to find out unless you know exactly where to look.

I think someone recovered it.
LInhof uses 4 rectangular shims mounted on a small screw to adjust position of the focus plane. Are those the shims you mentioned? If not, someone was tampering. Those Linhof shims float on top of the sharpened end of the screw so they are easy to displace or lose. You could always get new ones from any LInhof service center.

Hello, thank you very much, Bob,

I don't know if anyone has recovered the camera. She is really good looking. Under the tan colored leathering there are all the metal washers that cover the housing openings. Between the leather and metal there is the old brown glue.

As for the ground glass, I compared the focus with the fresnel ground glass frame with another ground glass from a Linhof IV that does not have a fresnel lens. Both match, near and far. There seems to be a correct distance between the ground glass support and the support of the ground glass frame in the opening of the camera back.

The Fresnel screen lies on an extra support, with a distance of exactly 4 mm to the support of the ground glass frame. Next to the Fresnel lens are those 4 shims you mentioned, each 1 mm thick and fixed with these small screw tips. Normally, the ground glass should rest exactly on these shims. Then we would have exactly 5 mm between the support of the ground glass frame and the support of the ground glass, which, if I remember correctly, would correspond to the distance of the film to the cassette support in the Graflok back.

But now someone (Linhof, Marflex - it is an "American" Technika with distances in feet instead of meters) added additional plastic shims to both sides of the Fesnel lens, each 0.5 mm thick. The ground glass rests on these two plastic shims, so that in the end there is a gap of 5.5 mm between the support of the ground glass frame and the ground glass itself. That would be 0.5 mm too much!

Perhaps these two plastic shim serve to compensate for the refraction of the Fresnel lens between the ground glass and the lens? Does this hypothesis make sense?

What surprised me was that it was generally always said that only older Linhof Technika V had the Fresnel screen between the focusing screen and the lens. However, because this Technika V has the black metal lever to rise the lens, I suspected a younger model.

So we would have different modification stages:

1. first the Linhof V with plastic ratchet for rise. Fresnel screen between ground glass and lens.
2. then the version with black metal ratchet for rise and with Fresnel screen between ground glass and lens.
3. then the version with black metal ratchet for rise and with Fresnel screen between focusing screen and photographer.
4. at the end, if I understood correctly, the version with black metal ratchet, Fresnel between focusing screen and photographer and black leather.

The Linhof Technika V seems to have had some rationalization in production. In contrast to the early Linhof Technika IV and the later Technika IV, I found in the Technika V focusing bed a lettering "Alu", as well as a round embossing stamp with an "8" and a quarter division. On the actual Technika V, there are 3 points in the first and 1 point in the second quarter. Could this be a stamp denoting april 1968? If this second hypothesis is wrong, the Linhof Technika mystery continues ...

Which is why I asked for the serial number 2142363.

Many greetings

Sounds like someone shimmed the old Linhof Sper Screen prevent sagging. We squally suggested using a math stick under the long edge. This sounds like someone improved on that.

Unfortunately the manufacturer of the scree, Fresnel Optics, was unable to come up with an acrylic for us that would ot warp. Strange since they owned Beattie and the similar Beattie screen did not warp. That warping problem is why we discontinued the Super Screen and anyone that had a warped screen on their LInhof we replaced with a Linhof ground glass and fresnel.

1996 Master Technika.

Hey Bob,
Im a little "lost" so maybe you could help me understand:

- The Master Technika 2000 started production at 1994, but Linhof continued creating the exact Master classic version that started at 1972? - which means that this 1996 version is simular to the "older" ones when it has to do with operating the camera?

- also, do u have information if this specific camera has history of fixings? or the serial number only lets you know when it was producted?

thanks,
Ben

When the 2000 and 3000 became available they simply changed the name of the rangefinder model to Master Technika Classic.
Before that it was just the Master Technika.

The 2000 and 3000 are identical to all Master Technika cameras except they do not have a rangefinder. All movements on all MT are identical. Same rise fall, shift, front and back, same bellows, same extension.
On the 3000 the bed drops further. In place of a rangefinder on the 2000 and 3000 an internal wide angle focusing system was added to the camera. On the 2000 this WA system is focused by a lever in front of the front standard. On the 3000 that lever was replaced by a knob on the lower right side of the body.

Hi Bob

I know this is a place for Linhof serial numbers but I'm desperate. I want to replace the bellows on my Linhof Technika III Version 5, S/N 55487 and I'm asked if it's bellows with an off-center front (no clue what that means omegle tv (https://chatdoz.com/) omegle brasil (https://omegle-brasil.com/) chat avenue (https://chat-avenue.pro/)) and they also need front and rear sizes just confirm the correct model. What sizes and how do I measure these? I'm a new user of the Linhof and actually a newcomer to large format photography.
I hope I didn't upset anyone by posting this here. Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks
Alan

Ah Excellent! thanks!!! so 2057 is one of the very early III's

16061 of 1960 has no RF but is at the opposite end.

I have heard both 1956 and 1957 given as the end of production date of the III.
I assume this is because it coincides with the introduction of the IV in late 56' but it would seem that production (at least of the no RF models) continued until the end of the decade.
Or did production stop in 56'/57' but sales of inventory continued until 1960?

I do have a copy of the Camera Story but it is a first printing, and not much on the III and earlier I'm afraid.
Even though the III is before your time you are likely still the most knowledgable source of info on it around these parts.

I am writing an article on the Technika III 4x5 cameras. I would like to use a quote from you from early on in this thread:
“Much to everyones surprise there was one Technika III. Subdivisions of the III are from users definitions not factory designations. To the factory you have an older one or a newer one but they are all III models and those camera did keep evolving until they evolved so far that they became a new model, the IV.”
Would you be ok with this?

Hi Bob! I have notes about the 5x7 V (first sold in 1963) that say it was updated in 1979 to the Vb and sold until about 1986. However I can't seem to find my source for this, do you recall a VB 5x7 model and if so what the updated features were?

Thanks

No. Only the 23b. Not a V one.

Ok, I’ll ask—I’ve had these cameras for a little while but:

Technikardan 45 (not S): 9821464
Master Technika (with a removed rangefinder*): 6415184
Baby Technika (23 or 69–I don’t know the proper names of these, I think it’s a IV): 48171

I’m guessing the 4x5 cameras are 70’s sometime, and the little one, I have no idea but noticeably older.

Thanks!

*(I got those rangefinder parts in a bag, eventually I may look for someone to try reassembling that.)

Thanks, I looked the stuff I got with the TK, and there was a little “Passport” or certificate of ownership that looked like it came with the camera when it was new, it was signed by several people, but not dated.

The date went on the warranty certificate that came with the passport that was filled in by the dealer and was sent to the factory. In return the buyer was sent a few issues of Photo Technique magazine.

Thank you, Bob. This is very helpful. Do you know whether it would be possible to swap the hot shoe between a 1965 Super Technika V 5x7 and a early 70ies MT 4x5?

Thank you,

Should be no problem. Just unscrew the retaining ring under the top of the camera.

Hello Bob,

I have two Linhofs, and would be grateful if you could tell me about their production dates.

1) Linhof Technika III, serial number 32217. This camera came with a Schneider 150mm f/4.5, serial number 2441320. Can you tell whether it is possible that the lens was purchased originally with the camera (though not necessarily sold as such by Linhof)?

2) Linhof Master Technika, serial number B541361.

Thank you so much,

Jacob

What year and model of Master Technika is one with the serial number of B571227?
After 1994. It’s the Master Technika, if it has a rangefinder, it’s either the 2000 or the 3000 if it doesn’t have the RF.

Hi Bob,
Thanks so much. perhaps I am not reading the serial number from the correct spot. That was the only number I found on the camera. It is on the moving arm below the rail. I think it's the rail for the range finder focus. I'm not familiar with these large format cameras. Would the number be someplace else?
If all else fails would it be possible for me to send you a couple pics? Thanks again. Michael

That is the serial number of the lens that cam was cut for.
Look to see if there is a number in the accessory shoe.

I sort of figured that. I have literally checked every inch of the camera including the accessory shoe and can't find another number. Basically, it has a round level bubble on the top left center, a flash shoe and a strap holder on each side of the top (at the front edge). The rail has a round hole and a sort of rectangular hole. No "Linhof" cover/ID plate. I hope I'm not inconveniencing you too much. Michael
