A friend is thinking about buying a scanner, a Epson V500 and asks if it is really limited to MF as maximum size for scanning film.

I have a Epson V700 that can scan any format up to 8x10 by using the included plastic frame to keep the upper glass a fixed distance from the bottom glass. In fact, I can use that frame and put any film format on the glass and indicate in the software what to scan.

When using that frame on the V500 and using the proper scanning software, would the V500 be capable of scanning 4x5 ? Or if that with the V700 included frame would be to large (I've never seen a V500), would it be possible to make and use a fitting frame of the same thickness ?

It seems to me those included holders only serve to keep the film straight in the vertical and horizontal plane, which is of course important when batch scanning.

Thanks,
Stefan.

No, the transparency adapter isn't wide enough to scan 4x5 in a single scan on the V500. You could of course scan and stitch.

Hello Welly,

Thanks for your quick answer, but I don't understand: the (8x10) transparancy adapter is what it is; how can it be wide enough for 9x12, 4x5, 5x7 and 8x10 on the V700 but not on the V500 ? What I meant was: using the adapter that comes with the V700 on the V500; maybe that's the misunderstanding ? I suppose the glass of the V500 is at least A4 format ?

Thanks,
Stefan.

I'm referring to the transparency adapter which is in the lid of the scanner. When you scan in a negative/transparency, it doesn't use the bottom half of the scanner, it uses the top half. I'm not referring to the actual holders you put the negatives in.

If you look at the V500 specs (http://www.epson.com.au/products/scanner/perfectionv500photo_specs.asp) you'll see the transparency maximum scanning size is only 68mm wide.

Right ! I think I understand now. Thanks !

I've scanned many 4x5 negatives on the V500 and Welly is right, you have to scan two different parts and stitch together. It works, but is a bit of a pain.
