View Full Version : Wanted - 16 photographers for the 2013 Folio Exchange

Jim Becia
23-Jan-2013, 20:11
I have been "reminded" that it is about time for this years folio exchange. Like last year, it would be nice to have a total of 16 participants again. Makes for a nice folio.

PLEASE READ IN ITS ENTIRETY BEFORE SIGNING UP.

1. Paper size is 11x14. The image should have at least one inch of border surrounding it. (An 8x10 size works nicely, but as long as there is a one inch border, no problem.

2. Photos can be digital or analog.

3. Color or black and white - vertical or horizontal.

4. Photos should either be signed on the front, or have a title on the front. (Please do not use ball point pen.)

5. Included with your 16 prints (assuming 16 participants) should be a short bio, info about the photo including technical info, where it was taken, title, camera/lens used, etc.. I will go into more detail on this at a later time.

6. All photos need to be shipped to me in Wisconsin. Please make sure they are very well packaged with some padding around the prints. Do not just stick them in an envelope and mail.

7. You will get "billed" for shipping plus $4 to help defray the cost of the folio and shipping supplies. I hope that is acceptable to everyone. I take care of putting everything together. I think the past participants have been very happy with the results.

8. Almost forgot, the subject matter - Rocks. (I'm working on something catchier than just Rocks.

I can't think of anything else at the moment. I'm writing this from the campground in Zion Nat. Park. And will be out and about for about three more weeks. So, please PM me and fill up the places. I'll be checking my email when I have a signal. Photos will need to be delivered to me by March 1.

Thanks, Jim Becia

This is going to be fun. Mentally going through rock photos in my alleged mind and thinking about which to pick. If anyone has a suggestion, glad to consider it. None of these images are so sacred or hard to print that they couldn't be used.

I'm writing this from the road, so I don't have all my notes in front of me, but I thought I would try to get some info out to you right away. I will also mail this to everyone (pm,) so please make sure your mailbox has some room for the messages.

Here is some info on what information I would like sent along with your 18 photos.
Title
Place where photo was taken
A brief description on the taking on the photo. A small paragraph is nice. If you get too "wordy," I do some minor editing.

Then some technical info.
Camera
Lens
Film
Exposure if you have the info.
Processing info
Paper used.
Any other pertinent info you might have.

Then I need name, address, phone number (this is mainly for shipping purposes as I sometimes use FedEx ground.) Website info if you have one.
I think I have it all covered. If not, I will post an update.

Thanks. Jim

Ok,

I'm back home and ready to start putting this folio exchange together. Hopefully everyone one received a "pm" from me with some info that I had also posted here a while back. I cannot stress enough that you package your prints safely.

Also, please make sure that your photo has either a title and/or your signature, or both on the front. I try to sequence to the best of my ability and then the info in the back is sequenced in the same order. Looking forward to seeing the images start to make their way here. Thanks. Jim

Welcome back Jim,

For those folks using silver gelatin paper, what type of pen are you using to sign/title the paper? I usually sign the mat in pencil, but that's not an option here.
Regards
Erik

Scott Walker
14-Feb-2013, 09:16
I have signed all of mine in the past with a 4B pencil, I'm sure there is a better way but I like the look of the pencil on the white border.

Erik and Scott,

I recommend using a pigmented ink pen, not a ball point or sharpie. The one I currently use is called a Zig Millenium. There are others, I think Sakura is a name that makes one. I bought mine at a scrap booking store. They come in various thicknesses, but I usually go towards a fine point. Cost somewhere around a couple of bucks. I am pretty sure that this type of pen will work well on photo paper. I use one on a very glossy inkjet paper without any problems. Hope this helps. Jim

I have an issue, I am making solarized prints so my border will be beige to brown, not a thing I can do about this. I have made some nice images but the process I use
forces a non white border.

Thank's Jim, I'll stop by the art store on my way home tonight & see what I can find.

btw: If you are looking for opinions on Bob's brown borders, I'perfectlyly fine with it.
I attended his Gallery Opening in Calgary last Friday, so I have seen a very nice sampling of his solarized prints and really look forewordrd to seeing his rock.

Bob,

Not a problem. I normally ask this so when someone is perusing through the folio and they see an image by "jim becia" or one titled "single rock," they can find the matching info in the back of the folio. You do what is best for your work, I can live with that. Thanks. Jim

Everyone,

If signing or titling your images does present a problem, just do what is best for your work. If signing in pencil on the back is best, please do so. The only exception is please do not sign with a ball point pen. That type of ink is highly fugitive. I guess being an inkjet printer myself, signing and/or titling works fine for my work and the type of paper I use. Please do what is best for you. Thanks. Jim

I've been doing some "planning." I just posted a "heads up" on the remaining number of folios that I have left to sell. I have pulled out enough to do 2 more exchanges after this year's. I may pull out a few more, but I am committed to doing the exchange for at least another two years after this one. Just thought I would throw this out to let some of you know where the folio exchange stands. I'm just not sure I want to go through the hassle of producing more of them and tying up what turns out to be a good sum of money and it has gone up considerably since then. Time will tell. (I've always wanted to produce a folio that would handle a 13x16 or 14 x17 piece of paper.) It still in in the back of my mind. Thanks. Jim

Folks,

I want to make this clear, all images have to be on 11x14 paper. That is the size of the folio. The image itself can be 8x10, 9x12, but the idea is to have a one inch margin all around your image. Please make sure the paper size is 11x14 so it works in the folio. Thanks. Jim

OK, would be nice if the forum archived photos of the yearly portfolios for all that were not able to participate.

Was kind of confused on the money end of it. What was the total 'out of pocket' expenses one had to pay to be in the swap?

I think Jim was pretty clear about the cost:

"7. You will get "billed" for shipping plus $4 to help defray the cost of the folio and shipping supplies. I hope that is acceptable to everyone. I take care of putting everything together. I think the past participants have been very happy with the results."

I paid about $10-12 to ship my prints to Jim, pretty solidly packaged. Assuming that return shipping wil be about the same, I'll have paid maybe $25 plus my cost of making my prints to get a "variety pack" of 17 prints (in addition to my own) of varying styles to see how other people approach photography, from conceiving the image to final print. I'd call that an incredible bargain/opportunity.

And yes, it was a great bargain and wished I was in on it.

It would be nice is these images (and any others the members wish to sell) would be available for sale to the LF members at a nominal cost of say $25 to $35 a print for all the members that were not able to participate in the exchange.

11 x 14 or 11 x 17 is a great size. And archival pigment prints on rag or cellulose paper would be OK for me as long as the photographer could duplicate their silver print IQ with ink jet.

This would also offer an opportunity for the photographer to archive their work far and wide in various collections. We are all dying one day, disasters happen (I lost a lot of my older work in a flood) and it is a nice safety feature to have a litle of our work archived in various geographic locations. Something to think about.

On the photo forums they always seem to bring up selling ones prints. While this is not a big bonanza of $ for the photogrpaher, it does offer some sales to fellow photographers even if it is just in a nominal way.

Ok, just one print left to come in and it was to have been shipped on Wednesday, so hopefully, I'll have it by the beginning of next week.

Ok, we need to make a decision here, our last participant has yet to ship his prints, and a pm to him a couple of days ago has gone unanswered. I certainly hope everything is ok. Anyway, I am starting to get short on time due to my art fairs that are starting to take up my time, and also a vacation I promised my better half starting next weekend. So, here are a few options: It's too late to get a replacement participant, so I was considering putting in a second print (I certainly don't mind.). Or, I could just put the 17 in the folio and ship back your extra print. What do you guys and gal think? I have all the prints put into the folios. All I have to do is put in the last one and then finish printing up the info pages.

Also, I usually offer all participants a discount on the folios. Seeing that you are already having a package shipped to you, shipping some folios adds little in terms of shipping. So, anyone wanting some folios, the 11x14s will be $3.50 each and the 8x10s would be $3 - minimum of ten. If interested, just send me a pm.

So, let me know what we should about the folio. Thanks. Jim

Shame about about the last print. My vote would be for you to put in an extra print (as long as it is color :) ) - your work is very nice.

As much as I enjoy your prints, Jim, it seems unfair that you should have to contribute a second print as well as do all the organization, assembly of portfolios, etc. Since we'd be getting 17 prints when we really had no reason to expect more than 16, I think we should just go with the 17 we have and be thankful that you've been willing to do the hard lifting on this project for these years now. Thanks!

Yeah, I'm good either way.

Actually, I kind of like 17. It's prime, and I think that Gauss came up with a (fairly complicated) way to construct a regular 17-gon (think 17 aperture blades) using just a straightedge and compass. Yes, I'm a nerd!

Can we just order up our extra folios when you let us know our shipping charge?

OK,

I have not received the last set of prints, nor have I heard form the participant, so I have just finished printing the 18th image (I don't mind.) So you poor souls end up having to get two of mine. I just figured, everyone went to the effort of printing 18 images and I did not want to have that effort go unused. Besides, with my second print, that makes a total of just 4 images in color, you "black and white" guys dominate!! I have finished collating the images and they are all in their folios. All I have left to do is print up the information sheets, and I will be ready to ship. My wife is going to help me proof that info this weekend.

I put the images in an order that corresponds to the info sheets. And the info sheets get laid out in terms of how everything fits together. Once you receive the folio, obviously you can reorganize the photos in any manner that suits your taste. I am no expert in this matter. I just put them in the same order as the info sheets. Other than that, I think we are just about there.

I can say without a doubt that this third one is probably the best yet. Quite a diversity of styles and techniques. I certainly hope everyone will enjoy theirs. I will let everyone know their total once I ship. Makes it so much easier as then I have the actual shipping charge. I'll pm everyone once their folio goes out.

Thanks everyone for the hard work and I hope you enjoy everyone's effort. Jim

One nice thing about the folio exchange is that there is a unifying theme. The more-or-less concurrent print exchange http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?99613-b-2012-2013-print-exchange-call-for-entry-b
tends to be more open in that respect.

The theme varies each year (at least in the last 2 years that I have participated), so maybe next year's theme will be more to your tastes.

I doubt there will be a letdown!

Bob,

Seeing that I have been the one "running" the show, and since I am the only one who has seen your image, I will answer some of your concerns. The idea for a theme stems from trying to have some type of cohesiveness in the folio. I can't remember if it was something we discussed or not. I am certainly open to suggestions. I mentioned earlier in this thread that I have committed to do this for two more years and have set aside the number of folio covers to handle the project. If folios are still available after that time, and I am still kicking, I might go another year. Really much depends on my stock of the folio covers.

As to your rock print, you pulled that off with flying colors. Just to pique everyone's interest, Bob, probably has the most unique print. I really liked it and I will leave it at that. A suppose that is a bit of a teaser! I am at my printer trying to finish off the information pages. I am hoping to start shipping tomorrow. Will let everyone know. Jim

OK, so I have just returned from the post office after having shipped out 16 packages. The folios are on their way. I tried to ship the most economical way possible, specially if the difference between parcel post and priority was over $6. So some went out priority and some went out parcel post. I hope that is ok with everyone. I didn't want to pm everyone to find out their preference, so I made an "executive" decision and so they are in the mail. I'm guessing some of you who live closest to WI will see a folio in a couple of days. I will pm everyone with their final cost. Not sure I will get to it today, but should be able to pm everyone tomorrow with their final cost.

Needless to say, Folio 2013 is complete. And of course, now I start wondering if everything was put in the folio, did I screw anything up, the usual doubts.

Again, thanks to all who participated. I hope you enjoy the results. Jim

I made a serious mistake. Jim's package arrived while I was sitting at the table with my wife and... I opened it. It was just habit, second nature. I didn't even stop to think, just opened it and there it was, that beautiful folio with its eye-catching image. My wife's eyes lit up and I knew right away that I'd screwed things up.

I can't just close everything up and pretend it's just a bill, right? She's already seen it. In fact, she's reaching for it with greedy, grasping fingers. This is the third one of these I've participated in; I know that if she gets hold of the prints, at least some of them I'll never see again until they pop up framed on a wall somewhere. Doggone it, it's a portfolio -- people ought to have more respect! At least I ought to be able to look at them before people start carting their favorites away. My son, who brought the package in: he's got experience. He hears that little growl in my throat and he retreats to a safe distance. But my wife, no! She just smiles sweetly 'I know you love me, dear! Now give mommy the pretty photographs...' Oh, yeah: I know that smile. I've gotten three portfolios from Jim and none of them are complete any more. There's a photo hanging here... another one over there... oh, look: two of them together. I remember that one of my prints used to hang there...

Sweet little darling my foot. Remember that scene in the Shrek movie where Snow White has all of her darling little forest friends around here and they're all singing and smiling at the two trees guarding the gate? Then Snow White's expression goes frightening, her little forest friends smell blood and the music changes. Remember that scene?

My wife has her own theme song.

Ok, I put my foot down and got to see the portfolio all together and complete, once, for about half an hour. Amazing job, folks! Assuming I ever get all the prints back, the portfolio is the best yet. Magnificent job! Thanks oodles and oodles for putting this together, Jim!

First of all, a HUGE thank you to Mr. Becia for taking the time and effort to manage and craft this effort. Your time, care and attention to detail show in every aspect of this folio and process. Much appreciated.

Secondly, wow(!). I just went through the images one by one and read each write-up and description to better understand the nuances and craftsmanship that went into each image. Thank you all for sharing your work and passion. I am honored to be included in this company of artists and I think that this folio will help me be a better photographer as I learned something technically and artistically from each and every image. I am quite new to the joys (and heartaches) of LF photography and was a bit intimidated to be included with this accomplished group. Thank you very much for letting me participate and be a part of such a distinguished and profession effort.

I hope that the rest of the members of the LF community have a chance to see the images that we are able to enjoy in person. In the meantime, here is the image that I submitted and where the inspiration came from.

Balance | ’bal ns | noun
1: an even distribution of weight enabling someone or something to remain upright and steady:
• stability of one's mind or feelings: the way to some kind of peace and personal balance.
• Sailing the ability of a boat to stay on course without adjustment of the rudder.
2: a condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions | [ in sing. ] :
try to keep a balance between work and relaxation.
• Art harmony of design and proportion.

February 19, 2013

In July of 2006 I came to a stark realization that something very important was missing from my life – balance. I made the extreme decision to walk away from a successful career and position in NYC as a creative director at one of the most admired agencies in the world because it suddenly wasn’t as important anymore. After starting all over in small town on the west coast and building my own advertising agency I have first and foremost been seeking to maintain balance in all things. In life. In business. In love.

When the opportunity came to be a part of this print exchange I knew that I would be in the company of some incredibly talented photographers. So rather than try to hold my own alongside of so many incredibly technically gifted individuals I instead tried to find inspiration in the subject specified, rocks, and combine that with something that was incredibly important to me and would serve as a reminder of what is important in life. There is no artificiality holding the rocks in this image, just a very careful and deliberate effort to find the perfect balance.

I humbly submit this image for you all and hope that you find it a reminder and an inspiration of the things that truly matter.

Respectfully,
Tim Scott

I'm in an area with very spotty cell coverage, so this will be short. Hopefully the rest of you will have the folio in your hands shortly. Not sure on the one to Brazil, hopefully it gets to Gui shortly. I am certainly taking suggestions on future topics, so throw them out there. I guess it would certainly make sense to have a topic, so we could strive towards making an image for that topic. I know, in my case, I picked out existing images, while Tim and several others made images specifically for the subject, and they did a very fine job, along with everyone else, of course. So, put your suggestions out there, and let's see what comes up. Thanks. Jim

Could a gallery or specific 2013 Folio Exchange Exhibit thread be set up on the forum ?

This way others could enjoy and benefit from seeing the exchange group members' efforts.
Could even be a comments closed section, (if so desired).

This was my contribution, taken at Shore Acres State Park on the Oregon Coast. I used a Fujinon 400T lens on my Wista SP, HP5+ developed N+1 in D76. This image is a digital file from a scan, but I printed it with an Epson 3800 with K3 inks, on Epson Hot Press Bright paper. That paper is a bit on the warm side - I tried to replicate that here, but I'm not sure I succeeded. The image also doesn't appear particulary sharp here. I can't say I know how to sharpen optimally for the web. I'll give it another shot later and replace this image if I can do better.

I could certainly do it again once everyone has their folios.
Last time I did it everyone that had a digital copy of their print sent me the file.
For those that do not scan their negs and were not able to scan their own print I scanned the one out of the folio I received (with their permission of course).
My scanner is not great but I think I got the couple that I scanned to look pretty darn close to the original (at least on my screen).
I sent a proof of the file I scanned to the image owner for approval before using it and would do so again.
One thing I think I would change though is the text. Last time I put all the details about the images at the end of the picture section just like in the folio.
It did make it a bit hard to associate the print to the description so I think this time I would put print and text together, similar to what is usually done in the image sharing section.
The nice thing about one person putting it together is that the images will all be put into sequence as Jim determined they should be, and they will all be uploaded at the same size and on the same day.

As long as everyone is ok with it I will do this again, let me know.

Scott,

Scott,

This all sound great to me. I can send my files for this. Just got back into town. Has everyone received their folio? Hopefully all folios should be in the hands of those in the US. Don't know how long the the two to Canada and the one to Brazil will take. Thanks. Jim

My folio has arrived! :D
This is really impressive, great work everyone, and thank you Jim for your continued excellence with this project.
I can't wait for next years exchange.
I really like the idea of determining what next years subject will be long in advance, it would be a great reason to start planning a trip somewhere. :)

A couple of things. First, I will come up with a subject sooner rather than later. Just trying to narrow the list down. Secondly, as most of you know, one of the participants backed out and I put in an extra print, because every else had printed 18. As a result, I (of course) have two folios. What do you think if I offer it for sale to someone here on the LF board for $100. Don't know if anyone would be interested, but the monies would help defray some of my extra costs. And I would offer it first to any of you who participated. Not trying to make any money, but thought it might also appeal to someone who wants to see what the exchange looks like. I know for a fact that our prints are certainly worth more than that. (Let me know what you think.) I am still waiting on payments from 5 participants. I would appreciate payment as soon as possible. If for some reason, you did not receive my PM with the total, please let me know and I will get it out to you again. Thanks. Jim

I don't have a problem with you selling it Jim.
At $100.00 someone will be getting one hell of a deal @ $5.50 a print.

Hi Jim and folio members,
I'd like to purchase the extra copy if not spoken for by a folio participant.

Greetings to members of the 2013 Folio Exchange

I’m the lucky one who spoke up after Jim offered the extra copy of Folio 2013 to help defray costs. I received the package just last Thursday, the 3rd. Though I’ve only been able to view it twice due to a busy work schedule, I wanted let you all know I feel very privileged and fortunate to be the only person outside the group to have a copy.

First of all, my congratulations and respect to each of you for producing the excellent individual prints which comprise this collection. The “rock theme” is a great starting point and the images, varied as they are, hold together very well. In addition, I’ve made a point to enjoy each image individually and apart from the group. They are, indeed, wonderful and unique images, beautifully presented.

The details - stories, information, technical data - accompanying the folio are most informative and, in combination with each image, tell a good deal about the photographer and his (or her) photography. The technical information is particularly interesting - as is the overall variety of papers, textures, processes and printing methods (wet vs. ink, etc.). This type of exchange not only results in a wonderful product, but a vehicle for learning and understanding.

Ideally, it would be appropriate to comment individually about each image, but just now time does not permit. Perhaps at some future date I’ll have the opportunity to do so. For now, I simply wanted to convey my appreciation for your work and my enjoyment of your images and the folio as a whole. I shall look forward to a future folio exchange when I can participate !

Lastly, special compliments to Jim for his coordination and management of the whole project ! In a word, Magnificent !

Dennis
