View Full Version : does the nikkor 90mm sw f8 lens fit inside a crown/speed graphic

Hi all,

I wondered whether the Nikkor 90mm sw f8 is small enough that you can fit it on Crown or Speed Graphic and close up the camera, obviously with no cramming. Has anyone here actually put this lens on a Speed or Crown and closed the front door?

Thanks!

Peter

Sorry but, no. The 4x5 crown graphic will not close with a 90mm f/8 Nikon mounted. The similar Schneider Super Angulon and Rodenstock Grandagon lenses do not work either.

I can confirm that. It's just way too deep. Any 90 with a similar design is not going to fit in there with it closed up. Maybe if you took the rear element off...

Thanks a lot for the feedback.

A follow-up question:

What, in anyone's experience, is the best performing 90mm that CAN fit inside a closed Crown/Speed Graphic. Don't care too much about movements.

Thanks!

Stopped down to f:22-32 I can't tell any difference in sharpness/contrast between my old (plain) Angulon, and a Super Angulon.

I agree with Bill, if you get a good 90mm Angulon at f22 it's as good as any modern lens and very small and light.

There's plenty of posts on what to look for with these lenses.

I suggest a 90 mm Angulon, try for one with a later serial number in the 6,500,000+ range or at least make sure you can test one older than that before you buy it.

Alternatively, a 100mm Wide Field Ektar is a fine lens without the quality control issues of the Angulon

Thanks so much for the advice.

Congo / Osaka 90mm F6.3 will work too.

Why so camera-centric? If it's the Nikon you want, e.g. if you insist upon an astoundingly sharp optic that is simply not likely to be surpassed, for a mere couple of hundred dollars nowadays, snipe yourself a Meridian 45B camera that WILL accept a Nikon SW 90mm f/8 on a flat board-- and fold up safely with the lens inside. The 45B focuses wide angles with a geared inner rail. Bed drops 90˚. Helluva camera, weighs 5lbs and is all metal with back post moves like a Technika.

The 100mm Ektar is really nice.

If you go with an Angulon, you might want to purchase several samples, test them against each other, and sell off the losers.

the reason: i have a graphic already that works so well. i just need to learn how to swap the RF cams from 135mm to 90mm.

The 90mm Optar was made for the camera....

One more thought, what about the 90mm Rodenstock Geronar WA? It would probably fit, is a modern lens with multicoating, and Rodenstock's quality control is great.

I've not tried that one on a Graphic but I would be very surprised if it did fit between the rails when the camera is closed. Isn't that the lens that is mounted in a Copal #1 but sits proud from the lens board and is mounted in a Copal #3 hole? I think the Copal 1 shutter might stand too far away from the front face of the lens board. It is certainly too large in diameter to fit between the rails so, it is a matter of how much it stands forward from the front surface of the lens board...

+1 for the 100mm WF Ektar. Not only fits, but makes nice pictures.
