I've been thinking of getting one of those hard shell golf club carriers to use as a tripod carrying "bag." I read somewhere that airlines don't treat golf club carriers as a third piece of luggage. Does anyone know whether that's true or not? Last time I used a fabric Gitzo tripod bag Delta counted it as a third piece of luggage and charged $80 extra each way.

New rules have recently been agreed to between TSA and various photo organizations regarding photo equipment carried by pros while flying. Have you checked those new rule changes?

Unfortunately they don't seem to have been agreed between the above and the airlines - who are still entirely free to implement them or not at wil - the choice is up to theml. From reports so far from photjournalists and other professional photographers (and my one recent TSA experience), most airlines seem to have taken the "or not" route....

I have one for my Zone VI tripod. It's 48' x 12 x 8 and I was told by Northwest that it is oversize. They wany 80.00 each way as an oversized piece of luggage.

Unfortunately this is one of many reasons that I no longer accept assignments that I can't drive to.

You have to be careful using Golf bags for 'other purposes'. I play in a band and we transport our microphone stands in such a bag. We were playing a wedding in a golf club; bringing the gear in, the club secretary took one look at the bag and suggested that I '...must play an interesting game...'!
