I have a Wollensack 162mm f/4,5 enlarging lens that I'd like to use on my 4x5. I don't have a lens board that fits the lens so I can't do any tests. Do you think it would give a different look than a normal lens? Any interesting bokeh?

I also have this unmarked brass lens focal length is around 180mm with a max aperture of f/16 and stops down to f/512! I shot it today at f/16 and it was extremely soft, I couldn't even get it sharp on the GG, so I'm not sure if its a soft focus lens or its just naturally soft.

Can you post a pic of the resulting picture?

Are you sure that isn't some kind of special lens? like a macro or something?

f16 to f512 make me raise an eyebrow!? Never heard of that on an enlarging lens or a soft focus lens!

F16 is either a wide-angled design, or a portable-type ordinary RR. Coverage, either way, will be far more than you need or should use on a 4x5.

RR's have to be taken down in aperture size to sharpen up.

That might not be f-numbers but U.S. numbers (16 is the same for both systems). Here's a comparison chart: http://randcollins.files.wordpress.com/2010/01/diaphragmnumbers.gif
Anyway, U.S. 512 looks to be f/128, which is a little more believable than f/512.

Forgot about that... I had those style stops on a lens I had once, quite confusing if you only use the lens occasionally!

Here is a photo from the unknown lens at its largest aperture. Arista EDU, 100 ASA 1/30 sec. Straight out for the V700 with just levels, no sharpening or filters. It was a test shot, so I didn't care about composition.

Try it wide open next time and see how it preforms...

I have a Raptar 210 f/4.something lens with no shutter--it's the one they used for the eyes on the robot in Short Circuit.

It has a quite large aperture for its focal length and the aperture is perfectly round. I've always been happy with the photos I've taken with it, all things considered.

your 162mm Raptar should fit into an Alphax or Betax #3 shutter. There were subtle differences between some Raptars; a few were cut to fit a Rapax shutter; All the barrel and enlarging lenses I ever used fit straight into the Alphax/Betax variety.
