If you need a handle for a less than full restoration or a temporary handle for a full restoration, take a look at "curb straps" on-line or at a local store that carries saddles and tack for horses. These are short leather straps with buckles on both ends and generally cost in the $5 to $15 range.
The picture shows the curb strap I got yesterday for my Century Universal.

Looks like they have pretty beefy construction. Nice tip.

For a different style, do a Google search for "leather trunk handle".
Here's one place (http://www.brettunsvillage.com/trunks/howto/parts/handles.htm) that turns up.

They have the metal mounting loops (http://www.brettunsvillage.com/trunks/howto/parts/endcaps.htm#th16brackets), also.

Many shoe repair stores can make a new leather handle if you have the old one for them to use as a form. I've had several Deardorff handles made that way. I don't remember the cost but it wasn't very much and they looked just like the original.
