when i turn on my scanner it starts to make this grinding noise. when it turns on, the lower scanning unit moves to the starting position but it keeps trying to go forward even though it has no room to go. it then makes a grinding noise because it keeps trying to move. i took off the glass and tried to see if anything was blocking it but i could not find anything. if anyone has had this problem and knows how to fix it please let me know.
thanks

You haven't got the lock switched on at the back have you?

Strange, because you are describing a textbook case of a locked scanner bed.
Sorry I can't be of more help, I'm afraid you'll have to call Epson.

that is what i originally thought so i took the glass top off so i could check and make sure the belt was not slipping. do you know if there is supposed to be some sort of switch or stopper that tells the scanner when to stop before hitting the end of the rail?

I put up some exploded diagrams at the following link which might help you investigate your question about the switch.

http://www.betterscanning.com/scanning/dismantling.html

If you have run a gazillion scans on this unit, it may just need some lubrication on the guide rails with a super light lubricant applied sparingly with a towel.

thanks doug. i used those to figure out how to take off the glass top. i tried taking off the belt drive clip and putting it back on thinking that could of been the problem. that did not help. i feel like it is the software telling the scanner to keep moving forward. i also tried taking off the glass and moving the lower scanner all the way to the front of the scanner. i then turned it on and it moved to the start position fine with no grinding noise. i turned it off and turned it back on again and it made the grinding noise again trying to move the scanner all the way to the back of the unit.

is there a master reset or anything like this?
hope some of this help

I have the same intermittent problem with my V700. Note that the issue might go away for some time and then suddenly reappear.
Curiously what I have found to work is to put the scanner on its side (left side when loking at the front of the scanner) while the scanner is being power on and when the lamp start to warm-up (Vuescan tells you that the lamp is warming-up) at which point I put it back and put the holders. Once you have done that, the scanner will be good for as long as you want until you turn it off and let it cool down.
I have considered sending the scanner for repair but it works otherwise perfectly with a good calibration that allow me to use the Epson 4x5 holders without the need for the cumbersone Betterscanning 4x5 holders (I do use the Betterscanning MF holder that are a lot beefier than the Epson MF joke).

Hope it might work for you also.

Cheers,

Luc

it also could have issues with guiding belt

it also could have issues with guiding belt

That was my first idea but when I open it, everything was allright there. I took the opportunity to grease the guides.

Cheers,

Bumping this ancient thread, because I'm having the same issue.

Shipped my V750, locked both heads for travel (didn't do this last time and had to open it up and reattach the drive belts previously).

Somehow it got knocked so hard the long, thin bulbs on the bottom half popped out, and not noticing this I turned the scanner on. They were jammed between the carriage and the scanner glass and both broke, awesome. They are not replaceable, would need to replace the entire carriage head assembly (which I can't find for sale anywhere anyways).

The top half of the scanner, that actually handles the negatives seems fine, so I figured if I could still get it to initialise I could go on using it as before.

If I start up the scanner as normal: head does its little jog foward, then goes all the way back and jams on the far pulley. Grinding noise, red blinking light.
Push the belt tensioner in so motor can turn but head won't move: red blinky light after a pause that probably corresponds to how long it would take the head to travel
Disconnect the power to the motor for the pulley: as above

Can't seem to find anything that looks like it would be a limit switch, so I'm assuming it must be indexed to run a set length. I've tried starting the head from various points along its path of travel but all of them lead to it jamming.

I have a feeling I'm going to be selling this thing for parts, but before I do, was wondering if anyone had any thoughts or experience they could share. (Or maybe a new bottom half of the scanner they want to sell me...)

Update: while it's going to involve some soldering that I'm not 100% I can pull off, I found what look to be replacement cold cathode lights on AliExpress for $13 shipped (2.6mm x 240mm cold cathode tube) - looks to be somewhat common across scanners, LCD backlights, etc. Mouser wanted $38 for the same thing, so I'm fine with waiting a month on the longshot that this works.

I did find the repair manual on betterscanning, which indicates that burned out lights will trigger an error, so hoping that if I can successfully replace them the scanner will work again.

Epson has parts suppliers for their equipment. Not all parts are available.Check Epson web site. YOu can also check with Epson if they do repairs.
