Hello all,
this my first post here, I had lurked here for a while, this is an amazing learning place. My english is somewhat limited but I'll try to make myself "understoodable". I'm a former photographer, now a cabinetmaker or woodworker, as you prefer, and I'm thinking about retaking the old habit of taking pics, but now, as a hobby. I have a Toyo 45 C that I used to shoot still life at the studio and had the idea to make her more portable, so I can take her in trips, shoot landscapes, architecture etc.
This is a project for fun. I know that makes more sense to look for some used view cameras at e-bay and so on. But, I'm in Brazil, taxes and shipping will double the price of the item and, as I said, it's for the fun of it. I have some skills and the machinery, even a cnc router. What way I should follow? Look for plans in the web? Anyone know if something alike was ever made? Or maybe forget the idea? Thank you for your kind attention.

I think you would probably be forging new territory as far as machining. Have you tried getting your camera out into the field as it is now? You would be surprised how well it packs if you run both standards off the rail and pack them separately from the rail.

I make cameras with a CNC router and have some plans you could use. You would probably need to modify them to suit your needs but it would be a good starting point.

And don't worry about your English being limited - it doesn't seem to be. You should see what some people who claim to have English as their first language write!

Ricardo,

For a while now a friend (Daniel Malva) and I have been planning to build a couple cameras, last month we were looking for woodshops for rent here in São Paulo. We found a couple places not to far away, but maybe if you are close we could team up and get theses projects going.

We wanted to build 2 8x10" field cameras (one for each one of us) and one 16x20" that we were planning on sharing, and lots of different reducing backs for both cameras.

We are in São Paulo. Maybe we could sit down and talk.

Regards,

Guilherme

Ricardo, please take a look at the Toyo product page (http://www.toyoview.com/ProductInfo/ProductInfo.html). What you need is a box with a dropping front which will hold your current camera. Take the frames out of the standards, and just hold them in your hands and cut up some cardbord to give you and idea about what to do. The box front will drop down and support the front frame. Of course this will be a bit more bulky than a real field camera, but I'm sure that it will be fine for what you want to do.

Hi Guilherme,
I'm from São Paulo, but living now at Sobral, CE (!). But you know, the world got smaller. I'd like to join your team and take part in the project, someway. Pieces are small ,easy to go by SEDEX, good wood is the same everywhere and milling archives comes and goes by email. Send me some drawings. It looks interesting enough for me.
Thanks everybody for the tips. Dismounting the back and front from the rail for packing its a clever and obvious ( now) idea.
And Steve, how do I take a look in your plans. Are they available for the "public" or are personal projects?
Cheers,
Ricardo

Ricardo,

Perhaps have a look here:

Hi Ricardo, and welcome aboard.

Why not trade what you have for what you want?
Your Toyo is a good camera. You could probably trade it even-up for a good field camera.

Send me a private message with your e-mail address and I will send them to you. Are DXFs ok? It will have to wait until Monday as they are on my work computer.

Meanwhile, have a look at this site for inspiration: http://www.raymentkirbycameras.co.uk/

Especially the pages in the Workshop section.
