Hi folks,

I am heading to Bishop and points south in a couple weeks. I have always loved Westons image of the Junipers at Tenaya Lake and would love to visit the site.

Does anyone know where around the lake this image was taken. I see that others have found it...

If anyone could offer assistance, I would be most appreciative.

Regards,

Robert

If it is this place (image of my boys below), park at Osborn Point and head straight up the ridge.

But it looks like it might be a different place. Park near the east end of the lake and head uphill. That will be closer to this tree...it has been many years since I visited the tree.

A place to start, thanks Vaughn.

And keep your fingers crossed that Hwy 120 does not close before you get there! Last year, no problem, this year -- who knows?

Yeah, quite aware of the possible problems, but God willing, there's next year too. It's just been something I've wanted to do for some time.

My guess is that is was taken at the spot indicated by my arrow.

That struck me as a possibility. Why do you think it would be there?

Just after Labor Day I was there and hiked up to the spot indicated by my 2nd arrow and the view is very different. From Weston's view you can see a small peak between my hike and the peak Weston shot from, just above the road. There are no other peaks between the two. Also, Tenaya Lake is cut off on the right side indicating that he was directly above the west side of the lake. Also, if you look at the road, it is oriented so that if you drew an imaginary line continuing the road to the peak I think he shot it from, it goes directly to that peak on the map.

I am sort of confused too. I think I wandered uphill from the picnic area that is halfway up the lake to get to Ed's tree (and one of Uelsmann's rocks). But any wandering around there is beautiful!

This rock:

If the road is still open at Thanksgiving, I just may drive over the pass instead of circling around the north end of the Sierras and down 395. I am taking the boys down to San Clemente to see their grandparents and want to stop by the Alabama Hills -- we like camping there. I'll have my 8x10 'just in case'. We have breakfast in Lone Pine, then thru the Mohave and over on Hwy 15. Not the quickest route, but more interesting than making another drive down 101 or worse, 5!

I will be in the neighborhood (death valley) around the 16th to the 20th. Just got through with San Clemente.

Although Peter's location may be correct, I was always under the impression that it was a bit more easterly, on the southwest shoulder of Polly Dome. Gordon Hutchings used to lead AA Workshops to the tree. You might call the YV Gallery to get more accurate information. There are many Western Junipers fitting the description rooted on the granite slabs rising from the Tenaya Lake's northern shore. Frankly, I've never understood the intentional aping of well known images, other than for the purposes of education or homage, but to each his own. The window for an easy drive is closing, if not permanently, for the season – but you could always ski in (he says without a hint of sarcasm).

Vaughn's location photograph looks to be from the vicinity of the much westerly Olmstead Point. I've seached my Yosemite Place Names book and have come up empty on "Osborn Point".

from the parking lot at Olmsted Pt. cross the road and hike up the rocks. You probably find the tree and from up there

That's where the above photo pf my boys were taken. The area where the image was taken the OP is probably looking for, I believe, can be seen in my photo -- on the left hand side off in the distance, but on this side of the big dome that is on the north side of the lake (my photo is looking roughly east). Probably the area seen between the two near-by trees in my image.
