I picked up this unmounted barrel lens for $5, and wondered if it might make an acceptable lens on one of my cameras, or if I should add it to my paper weight collection. It has 39.5mm threads. Any insights on its usefulness, and best shutter to mount it (if it's worth doing so)? Thanks in advance!

If it is an old Petzval design, think about using it as a Meniscus lens. I have an old Ilex Projection Petzval lens that puts out an image size that is only about 4 inches or so. However, when I use just the front half, it becomes a beautiful variable soft focus lens that is about 8" focal length that covers on the 8 x 10 camera. I love using it for very soft portrait type of work.

A projection lens marked "anastigmat" is most likely to be a less interesting triplet design, rather than a Petzval. They were also cheaper to make - three pieces of glass instead of four, and no cementing.
