View Full Version : Lens cells that fit a Copal 1

I have a Copal 1 shutter laying around doing nothing. The Geronar cells that were in it have fungus that *does* effect image quality, so I'm looking for something else.

Are there any older, somewhat interesting lenses that could fit in a Copal 1? Bonus points if it's 250-300mm and covers 5x7. Also note that I have no qualms whatsoever about hacking things to work. It isn't like my cameras are pretty or anything.

240, 270, 305 G-Clarons, all f/9. If Schneider's coverage claims are to be believed, they all cover 5x7 at infinity

If interesting means really really inexpensive you're probably out of luck.

I have some Ilex Caltar 215mm cells for sale that are designed after the Kodak Commercial Ektars:

$400 is probably the absolute high limit of what I could spend, but I'm not looking for something for $100, no.

If I can't find something that is what I want in my price range, I'll likely give the shutter away. Might as well let it find a home with someone who can use it.

I saw those. I have a 175mm lens already, though, so I'm thinking that for what I want to do (5x7 portraits) something longer would be a better choice.

In the mean time, I have a huge 300/4.5 that I plan to use wide open with slower film. However, that can only go so far, you know? Maybe I should trade the Copal for a Packard.

Any interest in some 210 Geronar cells that are perfect?

I'm basically dead set on the 250-300mm focal length. I'm looking at building a decent 2 lens 5x7 kit and the 175mm/300-ish combination seems like it would be the best option.

Actually, thinking about it more, I'd almost say that the most wanted would be a 360 Heliar, but it's out of price range. I have the extension bed for the 5x7 so I could probably focus something up to about 500mm well, but I don't want to go too long.

Remember that your maximum aperture number is a direct relationship with the size of the hole in the Copal 1 shutter. So longer focal lengths will be ever increasingly slower lenses. That's why they can sell a 300mm in a Copal 1 shutter. You have to live with f9. Fuji even put a wonderful 450mm in a Copal 1 but it is f12.5 Smaller aperture works against you in portraiture. I'll PM you with an idea though.

This character http://www.ebay.de/itm/Schneider-Kreuznach-G-Claron-9-0-305mm-OVP-/190419445284 says he won't ship to the US but you could try screaming at him.

Yeah, the Heliar won't fit, but it's a dream anyway. If I ever get together with other LF photographers, I may see if I can borrow one because I'm really, really, really curious. I like fast lenses, but I'm not sure how much I'd like how heavy the thing has to be.

I have to clean up the 300/4.5, but it should take some very, very nice pictures when I'm done. On slow film. I'm pondering snapping up some ISO 25 Efke in 5x7 before it goes away completely.

Hrm. There's a 360/9 APO-Ronar on Ebay right now cheap. It's in barrel, so I wouldn't have yet another Copal 1. $140. Bonus: I have a lens board it'll fit so I don't have to make one. Hm.

ETA: ER, whoops, read wrong. Needs Copal 3. Argh.

Sell the shutter. There is a 15" f5.6 Wollensak on the bay, already in a shutter, fairly cheap. It is my main lens in that FL for 5x7. Big, but nice. You need less than 10" of bellows to focus to infinity.

I saw that lens. I'll actually be trading the shutter for some film holders and the 4x5 reducing back for my camera. This makes me very, very happy.

There's also a 12/20/28 triple convertible. I know I could focus the 12 and the 20 (though it may be tight at portrait length), but I couldn't do the 28 without some interesting camera hacking: I'd need to make a third extension bed and find someone who could make a larger bellows...or buy an 8x10. Heh.

Oh, and I'm going to safely assume that there are a few of you guys watching the bunged 14" Heliar that I'm also very, very closely watching.

I have a set of Rodenstock Sironar N cells (210) that would go perfectly into that shutter. So if you dont find what you are looking for let me know what you want for the shutter.

I have a set of G-Claron 240mm cells, which i can sell for a very interesting price.
The glass is pristine, minus a very small (and very thin) scratch on the back surface.
Probably i have a 210mm too, but it won't be so cheap cause it's like new.
Send me a PM if interested

cheers

I let go of the shutter for the 4x5 back for my camera and some 5x7 holders, so now I can focus on getting whatever damn lens I feel like getting. I'm going to continue my research and use the 12" Tessar type and the 7.5" I have. I *do* want a 12"/300mm lens in a shutter, though.

Possibles include the G-Claron, the red dot Artar, and the basic Dagor (not the gold rimmed one, as that's obviously out of my price range). I kind of need to see images, though. :/

Stephanie, Jim Galli is selling a 305mm g-claron in the classifieds right now. That's a phenomenal lens (that will also work for the next couple formats up if you ever go there) and Jim Galli is a good guy to buy from.

I know, but I can't buy now. Heh. I have to wait. Christmas money + yarn dyeing profits + a little extra = lens. It does fit the small list of things I need his lens to be, though: shutter, 8x10 coverage at least (thinking toward the future), right around the $500 mark or less.

Totally understand. If I could buy right now, I wouldn't have told you about it and would have bought it myself. :D
