I live in Moscow (outskirts) I can give you a private room, meals, also accompany on trips (to be guided) I wonder what would have to share experience and to know "what air breathing" foreign photographers, and perhaps in the hope to reverse the invitation. I do not take any money. You only pay for flights and travel and all that is connected with it.

Well, I was thinking about something like that myself.
I don't have the money for foreign travels, or large format (or wet plate) workshops. But I do live in a relatively interesting place with great food and wine (Croatia!), have a fully equipped lab (I also do E6), some LF equipment, and a relatively spacious house (with a spare guest room).

So, if other people are willing to try "couch surfing" type of travel, going to stay with (or receive) complete strangers, I don't see why couldn't we do the same. At least, I've "known" some of you for years (hi, Bill!)... I'd be perfectly willing to host a few fellow LFF-ers for a few days, show them around and organize some photo-ops. I've got all kinds of interesting stuff around, all within 100-200 miles: mountains, old Central European - Habsburg architecture, the sea is only about 3 hours' drive away, and I can even organize a sailing tour. And, Venice is less than 400 miles from where I live, so...

I really don't see why not? Hmmm, I guess we might actually organize something...

I think this is a really great idea, with both my children grown up and flown the coop I have a spare double bedroom in which the grandchildren stay occasionally but other than that it lies empty. I would have to run the idea past my wife though, not sure she would be so keen.

I would love to do a trip to Russia and/or Croatia. I'm assuming spring/summer is the best time of the year to visit.

I would return the favor in the US of course.

This might work for me in 2013. I'll have to do some research, but I’m definitely interested. I came close to taking the train from Beijing to Moscow back in 2005.

Croatia usually has a mild autumn, too.

The trans-Siberian train project appeals to many.
Everyone I know who has done it (from Vladivoskok or Beijing) says it is OK for the first day and then is just Looong. But it is possible to do a section and visit places like Ulan Bator and Irkutsk and then fly on from there

Interesting idea.

RT from SF to Moscow range between 600 and 1000.

Definitely doable.

Very interested to visit russia. Been dreaming of the red bricks with snow, but traveling there from my country requires quite a number days of leave which i cannot afford to take currently. If i have time and saved up enough, will definately contact you. :)

Bump,

Anyway. I am driving distance to San Francisco and Yosemite(Bodie and Mono Lake). Sacramento and the Sierras. Lake Tahoe.

If there is any real interest is setting up some form of photography foreign exchange, I would be very interested myself.

I am surprised something like that doesn't already exist. I have a nice place, couple of couches, spare bedroom. A darkroom to use. I could easily feed someone for a week. Go out on a few photographic excursions, etc. You can rent a car for like $30 a day if you want to explore on your own.

The idea of exchanging that for non-touristy travel and photography abroad sounds exciting, really.

Transiberian train sucks... just saying. I done it and its a sure way to wish to never being born :) Not to mention you dont really get to see all that much, like in old days (and even in old days it was not all that much fun).

depends where is "there". And depends on definition of best season. Cheapest tickets arent intersecting with best / interesting seasons for photography all that well.
Only thing for sure - it is not middle of winter (too cold for most of non locals, and even for most locals) nor is middle of summer (too damn hot.. Moscow for one is deathtrap in July.. )

Oh no! That's too bad (folks he's talking about a Kiev 60 he was checking and the film got jammed, it was a private convo, didn't want to confuse people).

Perhaps open it in a darkroom to save the film at least.

I do not understand

I was making a penis joke.

As in, had to put something large between the legs to COMPENSATE for the small thing between the legs.

It is a common joke to make here in the USA, especially when a business man has a red sports car but drives only in the city where he can't go fast and doesn't need the fast car, he just needs to look like he's hot stuff because his "engine" is small... Get it?

But it is a joke made for fun and not meant to hurt feelings.
