It is just under 12" bottom to top (including hood). The rear element is about 4-1/4" across (the visibile part). I do not see any model designation on it, but thought someone here might have an educated guess. The lens on the right is a Ross Cabinet #3, which I believe is a 12-inch FL. Thanks! Ed

What a big lens!
You should buy it then and identify it later, Ed. :)

The serial number would help a bit, but is likely a # 6 or # 7 Petzval based on the lens measurement given. #6 would cover 10x12 and # 7 11X14.

Thanks Dan. Serial number is 21073. For sure the back lens is at least 4.25". I think the 7B is a 14-FL with 4" diameter lens, no? Is the 7 you are refering to different that the 7B? This thing looks bigger than a 14-FL lens to me.
I did buy it, btw :)

The 6, 7 and 7A all have lens glass measuring 4.25" / 4.1875" according to an 1876 catalogue (which is very close to the date of your lens)
The 6 has a back focus of 11 inches, the 7 has a back focus of 14 inches and the 7A a back focus of 16 inches.
Its not an 8 because the lens glass measures 5.25"/5.437"

Thanks Dan. Appears to have a back focus of 14 inches. So apparently a FL of 18 and 3/8th inches, right? Do you happen to know the aperture wide open?
Serial number suggests it's from somewhere around 1875, plus or minus. That's very solid Petzval territory.

Congratulations, Ed.
It's must be Petzval, not Euryscope according the profile and size.
The Ross Cabinet 3# lens' FL is 12in.
So I felt that your Voigtlander's FL must be over 14in according to your picture.
Are you sure that your lens' FL is about 14in?

Thanks guys! So it appears to be 18 FL, with about (perhaps slightly over?) F4 aperture. There is one waterhouse stop, apparently about mid-range, f8?. But it has no flange. Any suggestions to procure a flange?

Ed,
It appears you have the # 7 which is listed with an "Equivalent Focus" of 453mm or 17.75" with coverage to 11x14" Aperture is approx f/4.3
Good luck

Thanks Dan! Just one point of clarification: I think you posted this old advertisement, which I believe lists the FL at 18 and 3/8ths, no? Not a big difference of course -- just curious.

Pierre, I just took off the hood. Without, it measures 9 inches top to bottom.
Bruce ... you have such great suggestions!

Ed,
You are looking at an 1864 ad from my site. I checked an 1876 catalogue to quote you the specs given which is the same date as your lens (see http://piercevaubel.com/cam/catalogs/1876mccollinlp819.htm ). Voigtlander made slight changes over time which is why its important to use ads that match the date of your lens.
