Probably the wrong place, but maybe I'll be lucky. For an unknown reason when I tried to add some digital pics to my iPhoto library I was told that it did not exist & I would have to open a new one. Did that to put the pics on, but where have all my other pics gone to, & can I recover them? The iPhoto icon was still in the Dock, but empty. And no, they were not backed up, I know horses & stables etc. The most important/interesting are saved to other programmes, but I'd have liked the option of using the others . . . Thanks for any not too technical advice. Dennis.

Its likely that the solution is simple- that the docik icon simply can't find your library. When you open Iphoto from the dock, hold down the option key and you should have the option to choose which library to open. See if it can find your library. That is the first step.

Second step: open the actual Iphoto library on your hard drive, and not by the icon in the dock.

Then, if that doesn't work, copy what you have as a library, then working with a "recent backup" in hand, start some operations on the Iphoto library.

If you open it with either control (or option control both, can't remember, try all combos) you will find a series of menus for rebuilding the library - first the thumbnails (least intrusive) and then finally the entire database (can be quite intrusive).

Finally, worst case - if you go into "show contents of package", you'll find the original photos in the library. Pull them out onto your desktop and you can reinstall in a new Iphoto library.
