Omega Universal Var. Condenser Head?

I am sold on finding a DeVere, BUT I have another enlarger related question for all of you in the know -

Can the newer Omega Universal Variable Condenser Lamp Housing be used directly on an older D2 without modification?

There was a brief discussion of this on the www.classic-enlargers.com website recently.

The advice of the resident expert was that heads from a D2 or D3 interchanged easily but those mae for a D5 or D6 "won't work" - didn't provide any further information on why.

I replaced the head on my D2 with a variable condensor model and it was merely a matter of loosening the thumscrews and swapping the heads.
