Thinking of harvesting a Compur 2 shutter for mounting a 14" RD Artar a la Kerry Thallmann.

Any thoughts on a lens that came in Compur 2 that's cheap / worthless? I just need a good shutter and can use the glass for a paperweight.

Not cheap and worthless, but the first one which comes to mind is a 240mm Symmar convertible. Note however that while the earlier issues were placed in a Compur 2, the later ones were mounted in a number 3 shutter, so be careful before you buy.

270 Tele Arton from the late 50s to very early 60s.

I believe I have Kodak anastigmats which are mounted in dial set compur 2s. Not worthless but cheap enough. Good shutter probably only after a CLA. Ditto a Tele-Xenar.

Thanks for the tips! Rim set would be preferable too.

Have you looked at Ilex or Wollensak shutters? Probably easier to find.

Certainly an option, though I would want something small (fits on a technika board) and most importantly light weight.

You make an amazingly good point. :)

Compur 2 sucks!

Whatever gave you that idea? Mine is reliable and accurate, just like every other Compur or Compound shutter I have.

Angulon 165mm, but that's a "special" for wide-angle. And some Symmar 180mm f:5.6

The 240/420 Symmar is the usual victim for a Compur 2 donation. Do be careful that this is the correct version asthe Compur 2 comes in a variety of incompatible sizes.

Compur 2 sucks!

YMMV, but no issues with mine the 355mm f9 Repro-Claron is mounted in...

Thinking of harvesting a Compur 2 shutter for mounting a 14" RD Artar a la Kerry Thallmann.

I have that lens, and I must agree that it's a gem. I also have to agree with Kerry's assessment that it probably wouldn't be worth doing again. That shutter was NOS so it has a good long life yet. Most Compur 2's I've seen are rather ragged, and btw there are several (3-4+?) varieties of Compur 2, all with different cell threadings, so make sure you get the particular Compur 2 you're looking for. The cells from a 14" Artar will require custom adapters for any shutter, so that is a big cost regardless. Since the weight difference is rather small (especially if your 14" has a brass barrel), I would suggest using a modern Copal 3 (including the 3S), which is easier to find and in my experience much more reliable than most Compur 2s (the NOS ones excepted of course).

The cost does seem to be adding up - If I put $250 into buying a shutter, and then a couple hundred for mounting, another $50 for a shutter overhaul, then it seems a little expensive.

I'm having trouble finding an alternate lens though. I want something in the 360mm range, and really light.

Thanks all. I think I've deveoped an alternate plan (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?94888-Advice-lightweight-14-quot-or-360mm-lens-for-4x5).
