So I'm curious what types of lenses might fit this shutter. It was originally holding a symmar 360 convertible. I imagine SK grimes could make this into something sweet, but I'm poor (damn student loans) and am hoping to find something that screws right in even if the image is funky.

If it originally held a Symmar 360mm f:5,6 convertible, I think it's a V, not a IV.

A Xenar 300mm f:4,5 should fit, as will most other 300/4.5 of around the right age and origin.

I am pretty sure it is a Compound IV , at least the 360mm f5.6 Symmar I have is in a IV and not a V.

One suggestion that directly screws in is a 16.5cm f2.7 Tessar or 16.5cm f2.8 Biotessar, but these aren't cheap.

I bought my Sinar Select 360/5.6 Symmar in Compound new around 1970. Sinar's catalog at the time indicates the shutter is a Compound IV 10/2. I can't say which other lenses might fit it though.

my 210 f3.5 xenar and 165 f6.8 angulon are in compound IV shutters

Just about any 240mm f:4,5 of that age came in a IV shutter.

The 210/3.5 Xenar should be, but the 165/6.8 Angulon is usually in a #2 shutter. Even the 210/6.8 Angulon only takes a #3 shutter, so I can't see any reason for mounting a 165mm in a larger shutter?

BTW, I have all the angulons, from 65m to 210mm...

a 165mm f2.7 tessar sounds very cool. I have along with this shutter, a 240mm xenar f4.5 in a compound 4 shutter

The 165/2.7 Tessar goes straight in, although I did the swap with the 240 Xenar, not the 360 Symmar. For those with a little machining expertise the Compound IV is the right size for a 9" Verito. You just need to make new tubes threaded for the shutter on one end and the Verito cells on the other, so no need to irreversibly modify the lens or the shutter.

If you're still looking for a lens for this shutter, Dr.Tang informed me in my [FS] thread that the Xenar 21cm f3.5 lens I have on sale in the classifieds fits this shutter. Let me know if you're interested :-)

What happened to the original lens cells from the 320? I have one with a missing rear element/cell, looking to find a replacement.

42CM Repro Claron. What happened to the Symmar? Was it the Dagor type? Those are killer lenses.

Hi all, I'm willing to pay the money for a 16.5cm f2.7 Tessar if I know it will screw right into a compound IV shutter. Can anyone confirm? Also, what would the image circle be on that lens? Would that shutter allow maximum stop?

@Dhuiting do you have a link showing the lens? From a quick google-search it looks more like a barrel lens that can not be mounted on a central shutter. I might be wrong though.

Dan, I can give you a qualified yes. I have put the cells from a 16.5/2.7 CZ Tessar (serial in the range 709.xxx) into a Compound IV that formerly housed a 240/4.5 Xenar. I can't guarantee that your Tessar will have the same thread size as mine, but as the thread diameter is only slightly smaller than the overall diameter of the cells it doesn't look like there would be a difference between a shuttered version of the lens and one in a barrel.

Looks like Paul and I both said it 5 1/2 years ago, and we still think it is true...

Anyhow, both the 16.5cm f/2.7 Tessars and f/2.8 BioTessars were built for 1/4 plate cameras (Miroflex?). The Tessar illuminates a 4x5 plate open wide, but is fuzzy in the corners. A Compound IV shutter iris should open wide enough for full aperture on this lens.

Yes, 21cm Angulons are in Compound III shutters. They were offered in Copal 3 shutters briefly towards the end of the production run.

You are correct about this one also, not sure, but sounds right to me... (#3, #4, they are merging, as I haven't used this in 10 years...)

Thanks!!!
