Convex prints

You know, those portraits of our ancestors, in the oval "bubble glass" frames.... I've always wondered how the convex prints were made...
Was the still wet print stretched & dried in a mold?
Any ideas how to reproduce this type of print?

Great find!
That explains the "pulp like" texture of the paper on the prints I have.
I'll have to research both paper and emulsion making.
