View Full Version : Pushing with Rodinal

Hello All!

If I wanted to push Fomapan 100 a full stop (200) with Rodinal or more precisely with "Fomidon", what would be a good dilution ration and starting time?

Are there any sources online that list the various recommended dilution ratios for Rodinal/Fomadon?
When would it be wise to switch to a higher dilute version or a higher concentrate?

Rodinal is not the best choice for pushing, modern formula developers are better suited.

Agree. However, maybe he just wants a more pronounced grain, as 200 and 400 films are pretty easy to find.

Yes, it is possible. I once pushed Fomapan 400 to 800 and 1600, using Rodinal (actually R09) diluted 1+20.
Note that it's a "push", not an actual increase in speed. But the results were not bad at all.
I think I have some sample pictures somewhere; I'll try to find them and will post them here.

Stand processing to me does a better job than "push" processing as it helps bring the shadow detail up on underexposed film without so much blocking of the highlights.
Of course that said some like the tonality of a push for certain lighting situations. General rule is add 20% to the time for each stop underexposure.

Fomapan 400 exposed at EI 800, developed twenty minutes in R09 1+20.
The last one is a 100% crop.

The above pictures are scans of the negatives, with a slight contrast adjustment in Photoshop.
But what really matters is how the negatives print. I've enlarged them to 7x9" on variable contrast paper; the EI 1600 ones required a #5 filter. These are scans of the prints:

Eight responses later and not a single answer to any of the questions. I love the internet :-)

What do you mean? He asked for a dilution and time to push Fomapan one stop in Rodinal. I gave him a dilution and a time which worked for me with Fomapan 400 (note, a film which many regard as unpushable!) with good results, and I've also showed him those results, so he can judge them for himself. OK, it's not Fomapan 100, but it's very close. I think I've answered his question well enough.

for development times, I always check the massive dev chart. There's an entry for exactly what you're asking: http://www.digitaltruth.com/devchart.php?Film=Fomapan+100&Developer=Rodinal&mdc=Search
as far as quality of results, who knows. but somebody has done it at least.
