Lens VM has a nice historical description of the triple achromatic - designed in 1860. All three lenses are balsamed (similar structure) achromats and may need redoing after 150 years!

It was used for both ordinary formats but also in huge lenses for copying/reproduction.
Do I read the serial number as 6xxx? This would be a typical item from the period up to when Dallmeyer made the RR innovation (which lead to less interest in the triplet).

The focal length is measured from the waterhouse slot to the image formed from a very distant object.

Yours shows signs of rather rough "gritty" cleaning. Use of a fine abrasive, turning the barrel to maintain parallelity with flat ends, would remove most of the marks.

Thanks,Steve,the serial number is #6363.

I know this is an old thread but adding that I just picked a Triple Achromatic up ... serial is 5294

I plan on using this lens on 4x5 and on MF digital (645 system) ... the latter with the center element removed for improved "soft focus vignetting' performance at roughly half the back focal length and almost twice the f#

Mine has a back element of 1.5", so it is the #1 Triple Achromatic with a back focus of 7", covers 4x5 ... a bit challenging to adopt to my helicoid as I need to find a way to mount the lens recessed into the helicoid ... working on a solution for this ;-) ... as it is right now, I have a nice macro lens ;)

Hi Rudi

I also have a Dallmeyer Triple A lens. Serial # 3432 ( about 1861 ). 7" FL is the # 1 as you mention.

See some references attached including Dallmeyer's own letter to the editor about his lens in 1861.

I'm sure you saw my photo this month, taken with the middle element removed (as Dallmeyer advertised you could do for a while). Here it is again for future researchers. Enjoy it Rudi, I have a feeling these sleepers are awakening.

One of these sold on ebay UK this week for just over 30ukp. I bid 31 and lost, didn't want to risk more as it looked rather beaten up and might not have been complete judging by the photos.

I wouldn't be too worried about completeness of these.
I have had just everything of these pre-rectilinear types through my hands including Ross SA, OA and LA and they have always been complete and with reasonable glass.
They didn't get much use as the RR had quite a few advantages and dominated within a decade.

Garrett,

Great image ... yes, these are sleepers

Mine is cosmetically almost perfect, original finish mostly there. No separations whatsoever ... original flange

Figured out you can use this lens in reverse with the middle element removed on a 645 and 67 format ... solves my dilemma for mounting on a helicoid. Mount straight for the normal 7" back focal ... mount in reverse with lens "absorbed" by the helicoid for 3.5" back focal
Images of the contraption soon.

I show in my blog how I made the Dallmeyer Triple Achromatic #1 fit on my 645/67 MF digital camera system. Don't have actual images shot with the lens yet but this will have to wait till after the holidays ;-)
