Happy May Day! Here's a shot of my wife waking up in bed. (Yes, she is very patient.)

4x5 Pacemaker Speed Graphic, 6" B&L Cinephor projection Petzval, expired Polaroid type 51 film, negative scan.

Was this handheld? Either way, lovely shot. I like the off-center framing.

Thanks Jonathan, not handheld, just clunking along. I was thinking sometimes that I try to make my LF pictures look like 35mm pictures and my 35mm pictures look like LF pictures.

I think it's great to break the uber-formailty of LF sometimes. That portrait of the runner does not look LF to me, in a good way. Nice tonality and all that goes with it but there is a feeling of spontaneity that usually accompanies smaller formats.

Thanks J. I'm trying to split the middle, I think. Part of that is that my desired method of working is walking around with the camera on my shoulder and taking pictures of strangers. I don't get a lot of time and that keeps things informal.

Unfortunately I forgot to tone the picture, so I just replaced it on flickr. So I have to replace it here:

And finally its here.. freshly mounted on duct tape on me Technikardan (anyone got flange for Compound 4 tube type 2, one that is 76.7mm they like to sell/exchange for something?)... First live test.

4x5 Ilford, 240mm Heliar in Compound shutter (which is apparently a weeeee bit off, but who cares).

Was result worth it? Hell yes.. Now i just need to work out all quirks of glass (i.e how to deal with its contrast rendition), but so far it looks pretty darn cool.

One of the few images with a person as the subject I have done.
This may have been May but since it was made around 1982 I just don't remember for sure.
Dave and myself are slightly more weathered than we were back then, the rocks I suspect have notice the years little.

No tickling required. In fact I planned to take the shot with her eyes closed, but at the last second she opened them a tiny bit and smiled, too. She gets full credit for improving the shot. She's a reluctant model, but even she admits this is a good photo of her. Of course I think so but I've got no objectivity!

Another one from same test. Heliar is wide open, and film is Arista EDU 100 (i ran out of ilford suddenly and all the rest of film was either colour or iso 25 and light was fading.. so i winged it on 1/15th..).. Wee tilt here.

I got bogged today...I mean my van and darkroom caravan I use to shoot on location got bogged for 3 hours. I had to be saved by a passing 4WD. I did get to shoot 2 plates though in between bursts of rain and digging out the caravan. A bit of a challenge but loads of fun.

Taken yesterday at a local park. Shot on Polaroid type 55 film that "expired" in 1981. The negative completely solarized and turned into a positive, except for the sky. The colors just scanned in that way so I left them. (Scanned as a positive.)

It's a Polaroid so you know it has more integrity and coolness than regular old film, but it doesn't have as much integrity and coolness as wet plate would. Now if only I had done it with a cooler lens like a Verito or an Aero-Ektar, then it might approach the coolness of a wet plate... But then if I messed around with the emulsion on the Polaroid maybe I could make it better... maybe if I dunk it in coffee? Or do a lot of front tilt so that only her face is in focus? hmmm such problems....

Maybe I'll just go photographing instead?

Thank you for the kind compliment :)

The warm 'coffee and cream' cast to plates can vary according to the fix your using eg. Potassium Cyanide, Sodium Thiosulphate etc with the latter being more grey than the cyanide. I've also found that if my cyanide is becoming exhausted it can contain more silver cyanide which can stain plates an even darker honey colour.

I try to make sure the scans are exactly as the plates appear. Nothing worse than someone walking into an exhibition of my work and then saying 'hang on, it doesn't look like that on his website' :p

If you ever re-do this, I'd think a triplet or older lens might render the pavement a little more gently. But as is, it's still a nice contrast between natural and artificial.

Jess,

Of course I know you were teasing! That's the fun of it all. Thanks for your kind comments.

I think I'm most proud of being able to line up the double exposure without much of a seam showing. I used black construction paper taped over one half of the film holder for each exposure. I didn't have to Photoshop anything out, I swear! I suppose if this were digital it would be a no-brainer to stitch together two photos.

JP,

Don't want to sound like a dope but here goes: what's a triplet? Or more importantly, is that old brass lens territory or is there something in a shutter for 4x5 I could use? I'm interested. I believe that was a FUJI 180 - W.

No problem... A 3 element lens. brass is close as cooke made famous and expensive triplet lenses. Some projector lenses are triplet, but lack a iris, so are less useful. I use a 210mm meyer trioplan on my 4x5 speed graphic (which has a focal plane shutter). I really don't know what's available shuttered; some other people might know better. Old lenses in general did a nice job rendering backgrounds, but old lenses are often without shutters; their outdoor use might be on a speed graphic or 4x5 SLR or indoors might have been used with a packard shutter.

Marvelous, almost monochromatic portrait. As a struggling GAS addict you have rekindled a need for a Cooke PS945. (not that I can do anything with it like this; but if I owned one, I could if I could. Eh?)

I just got a fuji SF lens which is a triplet. If you stop down a little bit, it's not particularly soft. It comes in a copal-3 for less than the price of a copal-3.

I've got a fujinar tessar 210mm which is very good modern bokeh. Look for the 4.5 aperture for a clue something is a tessar.

If you are concerned about details... I believe it is a Copal 3S, which is slightly different from a Copal 3.

anyway... I have one too and quite like it when I need soft focus.

I posted the negative (and very solarized) half of this Polaroid type 55 image last week. Here is the much more murky positive half. It looks completely different despite being the same exact shot. Usually when exposing for the negative the positive is useless, but not in this case, maybe because of the age of the film (expired in 1981).

Jonathan, I really like that, but how will you protect it from degrading over time? Did you coat it or will you just scan it and use it that way?

Jonathan, I really like that, but how will you protect it from degrading over time? Did you coat it or will you just scan it and use it that way?

Thanks. The coaters that came with the film were all dried up, so I don't have a way to coat it. I'll keep it in the same quasi-archival conditions I keep all of my other prints and see how it fares. I have a few other prints from this box of film shot over a year ago and they seem fine so far, but when shooting film this expired I have to accept the consequences both good and bad. I may end up with a shiny, pale brown print in ten years. Who knows?

I will say that the permanence of Polaroid materials overall has surprised me. In going through my family photos there are some early Polaroid prints from the late 50s that still look really good, as well as some early 1970s SX-70 shots that still look vibrant. I had always assumed that one of the trade offs of instant film was a lack of permanence, but so far, so good.

Jonathan

Stephane
14-May-2012, 23:50
I think the lens represents the biggest part of the resulting image. Otherwise I dont see what I do that is different, except over-exposing the sheet, since I stopped using shutter. I believe that, as long as more than enough light hit the film, the picture will be just fine. And because of this over-exposure, I (have to) develop in rodinal 1:100 in cold water (16degC).
Your compliments, which are much appreciated, mean that something is actually working...

Taken yesterday at a local park. Shot on Polaroid type 55 film that "expired" in 1981. The negative completely solarized and turned into a positive, except for the sky. The colors just scanned in that way so I left them. (Scanned as a positive.)

Thanks! I wish I had tried it sooner. I was worried about the low iso, alleged low contrast, and something new. For the iso, I didn't even meter; the sunny 16 rule was good enough. (And I'd recommend bright, sunny light for this. My exposure was f/8 at 1/8 second.)

In terms of contrast, I'm still printing on Ilford's multigrade RC paper. After a test or two, I bumped the contrast to grade 4 or so. This print wasn't selenium toned, but the ones that I did tone... they were nice. (I did bump the contrast on the scan, so it's probably actually a wash.)

So yeah, give paper negatives a spin. Especially since film is getting spendy;)

Girls Big Night!

My daughter Sofia (third from right) and her friends on the way to the big end of year middle school dance. They asked me to shoot them, but took them a while to get ready and the light was failing when I made this. The negative is thin, and the highlights are blown in the scan, but I think I can fix it in the print when I get my enlarger set up again (I don't know how to do that on a computer).

Shot with my new (to me) 135mm f5.6 Fujinon W, which I bought to replace my old 127mm Raptar. I've only shot about ten sheets with it, but so far am loving it (it has so much more contrast than the Raptar). On Shanghai, developed in D-23.

Well I managed to develop my first c-41 negatives! Went really well. Used the Rollei Digibase kit and everything came out great. Just used my HP-Combiplan. Nothing good from the set but an in focus image with the Aero Ektar might as well be success. Kind of a portrait. Not sure why I thought the the arm rest in the way would be good....

I persuaded my wife to pose for me in a similar way to Julia Margeret Cameron's image 'Mary Mother'. The hood and cowl is some old black material I once had made up to skirt the base of my model railway, and the background is one of my old coloured popup BGs from when I was a proper photographer.

Nik was lit just by the light coming through the front room bay window and using Adox 25 gave me an exposure of 4 seconds at f11 with a Schneider Symmar-S 240mm f5.6 lens on my Horseman LX, I had to allow an extra stop for the bellows factor.

The sheets of film were processed semi-stand in my Paterson Orbital Processor (without the base) in Caffenol CL developer.

I'm quite pleased with this image, and there has been no sharpening done (want to give Nik a fighting chance) although I have carried out some other PP such as a bit of softening and vignetting around the edges and toned in Nik Silver Efex Pro 2.

This was my first real attempt at portraiture using the monorail and I doubt it will be my last.

Arista.edu 400 120 film in a Graflex back, 90mm F8 Super Angulon. This was much harder to focus than I was anticipating, I was hoping this would be a cool portrait setup. Might try a faster lens or just stick to my Mamiya C330 for 120. I was thinking the roll film back would be cool for shooting color LF though. Her eyes are a little soft up close. Still not a bad picture I don't think.
