I just started using the V700 tonight and I'm noticing black spots showing up in the same place on multiple negatives. They aren't dust spots from the negatives.

I still cleaned the glass to make sure it wasn't that but the black spots still show up.

Has anyone else run into this problem?

I probably should have noted that I'm scanning b&w negatives. Digital Ice is turned off.

They appear in both 48 bit color and 16 bit grayscale

Check your sharpening settings. Some sharpening algorithms create what looks like spots of black pepper all over the negative. If you're using Silverfast, there are some sharpening setting adjustments available, and they've supposedly rewritten their sharpening for the newest version, but I haven't tried it yet. I usually scan in SilverFast with the sharpening turned off. Photoshop has much better sharpening features, so I sharpen there.

sharpening is set to "none" using Silverfast.

Very weird. But, yes it looks like black pepper in the same pattern on each negative. With the exception of two black spots that do look like dust spots, but they are black and also in the same pattern on all the negatives.

You could have dead pixels on your monitor?

no dead pixels. The black spots are there when I move the image around in PS.

Post a sample of the black spots. Also, try scanning with the Epson driver alone (no Silverfast) or VueScan, are you using the supplied film holder? What size negatives? Does it happen for a different size?

Just got betterscanning holder. Haven't tried fine tuning anything until I figure out the issue with the black spots. Here is a cropped portion showing the spots. 72498

Here are two more crops. I scanned the same image with my old Microtek Scanmaker i900. Much better looking scan of same negative. The only problem is I have vertical lines. That was the reason I decided to upgrade to the V700. I could never get the scanmaker to stop with the vertical lines and it was a pain to edit sometimes. Now, that problem is minor compared to the issue I have now with the V700.

Try scanning a negative with a consistent tone, like a shot of a grey card that fills the frame. See if the pattern is consistent each time you scan. Your test images are a distraction.

Post the result of multiple scans (also try multiple positions on the bed).

run the scanner w/o film in it, you'll be amazed at all the shit in there.

It shouldn't be this bad.
