Has anyone come up with a good solution for a rear cap for the 6.5 inch Wide Angle Dagor? I recently picked one up that is missing its rear cap. There's not much barrel for a cap to slide onto as it's mounted in an Ilex No. 3. Perhaps a screw in cap could work.

I seem to recall this is an ongoing problem.

When I had that lens I had Grimes make caps for it. They were able to make a slip-on cap for the rear. And although there wasn't a lot for it to hold on to, it worked very well. I had no issues with it coming off.

It was the front where we had to use a threaded screw-in cap.

A generic plastic cap(size 38mm) fits perfectly on the rear cell of my (#776.735) 6 1/2" WA Dagor in Ilex #3 . Why spend a small fortune for a custom cap when it's not necessary. Spend the extra on film or chemistry.

I think the tougher cell to cover with WA Dagor is The front . My Ilex #3 WA Dagor front cell mounts nearly flush w/ the shutter face making it nearly impossible to fit w/ a press on cap. Usually needing a screw in cap. But the rear has plenty of barrel to use a press fit.

Great. Thanks for those tips. (Hoping to avoid sending the lens off to SK Grimes for a custom cap.) Is that a slip on or clip on 38mm cap?

The lens came to me with an older aluminum screw on front cap.

It's a 38mm 'slip on" cap.

Funny. Mine came with the same aluminum screw on front cap. This could have been factory.
I've seen many WA Dagors in the same shutter and serial # range with this aluminum screw on front cap.

Interestingly enough the 38mm Schneider slip on cap I bought was a bit too big. Something like 36mm probably would have been perfect. A bit of gaffer's tape around the inside of the cap did the trick to snug up the fit.

you could add a little velvet cloth to the cap and it just might stay on it :
