I've been watching an Ilex #4 Shutter on ebay, as I'm looking for one to mount a 19" Artar in. The bid ended last night and the shutter went for $535. $535!! That sounds outrageous to me. Is that what these go for? If so, forget it. Here's the link (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.d11?ViewItem&item=2969699675) in case you're interested.

For that much money you could get a 12"/6.3 Commercial Ektar already mounted in the shutter and some change too. It's well known that auctions can drive the price of an item well over its value...

When I asked the seller about it, he said he just had a 12" Dagor in an Ilex 4 that sold for a dollar less.

"It's well known that auctions can drive the price of an item well over its value"

Why is that. People just getting carried away?

Yes, that's nuts. A new Copal 3 shutter is $443.95 from B&H.

On the flip side, I just acquired a like new 450M Nikon in a Copal #3 for $450 so deals can be had. As David said, the shutter itself is nearly of that valuation. Know your limitations and let the irrational bidding proceed without you.Even if you pick up a shutter that needs a repair, it should not cost you a fraction of that amount. Be patient and you will be rewarded.

Cheers!

I call it the auction feeding frenzy. I watched a 12 dollar filter holder rocket to 50 bucks one night. I also think it is a case of "you ain't gonna beat me!" attitudes.

I bought a 19" Apo Artar mounted in a Copal 3 on a Deardorff 8x10 lens board for $495. I've also gotten a number of Ilex 4 shutters for $75 to $100 bucks in pretty clean shape. It's screwy what some people will pay for this stuff.

Who are these people and how can I get them to my auctions (http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=tpahjim&include=0&since=-1&sort=3&rows=50) damn it! $175 would be more than plenty for a #4 Ilex. I bought one 8 months ago with a 12" coated Dagor in it for $235 bucks. You could poke the glass out of the Dagor and be money ahead. tpahjim

Keep looking. It takes two people to get that carried away in an auction. Sometimes it happens, but usually it doesn't. Something reasonable will slhow up if you are patient.

Just keep watching Matt... That price will bring a lot of Ilex shutters out of the closet and onto the auction block...

Jim, you and I should both take writing lessons from the notorious dagor77 even though his prose doesn't always work that well. For example, he just sold some lucky person a new in box 260/10 Process Nikkor for around $135. This seems absurdly low, but recently someone (not I, I bought one) sold four of 'em, three on eBay, one off, for prices between $100 and $115. Maybe no one wants one very badly.

Cheers,

Dan.

Dan, thinking of changing my Ebay handle to Dagor 76.5? Yes even Dagor 77 takes a beating once in a while. Matteo, here's a link (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2971928080&category=15247) to a better one that's still priced for earth folks. I bought from this seller with good results although it takes an annoyingly long time for things to come from Canada these days.

Looks like the original guy may have shilled himself right out of a sale. It's re-listed here. (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2973665956&category=30076)

Jim, "photomagica" just might have more than one of them. "doldomi" was the high bidder on the first one, and he's quite real. He bought two of my 38/4.5 Biogons, paid as requested. He may be a shill too, but he's a real buyer. FWIW, he's located in Georgia.

On the other hand, would anyone real offer that much for a #4 Universal with no diaphragm?

Cheers,

Dan
