I just picked up a used 45A, and have found that with the back tilt knobs tightened the rear standard still moves if you put some torque into it. It takes a good amount of force so I don't think it will tilt taking out/putting in the dark slide; however, I want to make sure this is normal before I decide to keep it.

John,
On my Toyo 45A with the back tilted and the two knobs on either side tightened the back does not budge. I only applied enough force to slide my Quickload holder in and it held tight.

What kind of torque are we talking about? Shouldn't move under normal conditions.

When I first discovered it I was trying to close it and had forgotten to loosen the knobs. While very stiff it would start to close. It doesn't seem to move at all when I insert/remove a darkslide, but then again it could be moving a tiny amount and I'm not noticing.

Aren't there two latches on each side that block rear tilt?

The latches block rear-tilting of the rear standard, but you can still front tilt the standard.
