This is my first (that I'd show anybody, anyway)

I think Polaroid positives are the one thing you can scan on just about any old scanner.

As long as you can afford it! I got myself an Epson 4990 Photo scanner to do all my negatives with. I have yet to run a reflective scan through it, but I too have a ton of Polaroid prints in need of digitization.

Quick one from this weekend, cheap scanner, I see lots of dust, etc, sigh...
I gotta learn all this scanner stuff now.
Especially the resolution stuff.
I scanned at 4800dpi, makes a HUGE file!
I definitely don't understand it.
Yes, I'm a newbie to this.
Not that good, but it's a start.

I made this image on Sunday with Polaroid 57. Expiration September 1972. That's forty year old Polaroid. I just opened the box last week. I went with 1600 EI and set the lens at 1/150 f/16. She's low in contrast, but I like it anyway. The camera was my Kieth twin lens 4x5 with Ilex 215 6.3 lens. The scanned image is not as nice as the original. The sealer tubes are all good, amazing.

Gary,

A Polaroid 405 holder is what I use for my 4x5 cameras with Graflok backs. These holders seem to be pretty plentiful on Eb*y. Lots of people ask way too much, but you can find them for under $50. Slightly less common is the Fuji PA-145 holder that is pretty much the same thing.

It's a nice format to use with the Aero Ektar since it is smaller than 4x5 and allows for some movements with the AE without much light falloff or vignetting.

Good luck,

Jonathan

Playing around with my new Polaroid 405 back and Fuji FP-100c. Took four shots to get one that worked (first the back wasn't fully seated resulting in a white unexposed area, then I lost two shots to a weird light leak I'm still not sure of the origin of, except that it quit happening when I really carefully seated the back properly.) This stuff could be addictive though. The exposure is quite critical, like transparency film in latitude as well as the response to more or less exposure. I can really see where it would be great for proofing, as well as having its own merits. Now I'm already wanting two backs so I can keep 3000 B&W in one and color loaded in the other.

My wife Alicia, a special ed teacher, is starting a second graduate program in gifted education this summer. She was reading at the park while I played with the Polaroid back, then patiently sat as test model.

Trying an experiment. I have many sheets of 4x5 Polaroid film whose reagent pods have dried out and I have been wondering what to do with them. I hate to throw film like this out, but I was about to since it was of no apparent use. Then I wondered what would happen if I used an active reagent packet from another type of film. Here I took a type 53 sheet and replaced the dried reagent with a chemical pod from some 100 Sepia pack film. Considering the age of the type 53 (expired 1997) I think it worked well and even imparted a warm tone.

A couple of shots from our recent trip to my home area of east TN and stay on Watauga Lake.

The parents of a friend from high school offered us the use of their lake house for a weekend as a wedding gift. We took them up on it and had a wonderful time. This is a view from the deck looking across the cove to another house. I waited for the cloud that's partly behind the tree to drift farther into the frame and clear of the tree, then made another exposure on E100SW. I'll develop that E6 eventually.

Why wouldn't you be? This isn't APUG or FADU, negative scans are posted all the time, and most of them have at least some digital post-work. Even mine above had dust removal and the color and brightness/contrast adjusted to closely match the print, which the basic scans did not.

Jonathan,
A few years ago, my last batch of T-55 had dried pods.
We used a hair dryer before and after exposure, with limited success.
If I had a lot of dried-up film now, I'd experiment on one or two dipping it in hot water before or after exposure; maybe that would loosen up things enough to get some interesting/usable shots.

jcoldslabs
23-Jun-2012, 13:48
Ari,

With my expired Polaroid sheet film if I can feel any 'give' or squishiness to the pods I will put the film the oven set on low for three minutes before pulling it through the rollers. This seems to reduce the viscosity of the reagent and allow it to cover more--but usually not all--of the image.

If the pods are completely dried out or ruptured, as many of mine are, I have found there is nothing I can do to revitalize them directly; thus, I am trying this "pod swap" idea which has worked pretty well so far, although it is a PITA to do. I'll post more results here with various films as I test them.

Say, like most of the 405 backs I see for sale mine didn't have the overlay for the ground glass. I just figured I'd mark it off with dry erase marker, but it's not an even border all around. The QP size Fuji film seems offset vertically from the center of the 4x5. Any suggestions how to mark the actual area? It might be easy if I removed the GG but that's kind of a PITA on the Tech III. I might be able to insert the back "backwards" enough to see where the lines would go, or something.

And in the "yet another creative way to screw up department" last weekend on the trip to TN I managed to pull the back out of the camera and have the dark slide stick to the back and come off. Slide still in camera, back in my hand - scratch one sheet of film.

Those strange spots? I dont know:(
Johnatan, heeeelp!

jcoldslabs
25-Jun-2012, 13:11
The spots are most surely from something being stuck to the rollers, that's why they repeat every couple of inches or so as the rollers turn and the spot where they are dirty comes around again and leaves its mark. I believe Polaroid recommends cleaning the rollers of the 8x10 processor after every sheet you put through it.

Scanned from the negative side of Polaroid Sepia pack film, rated at ISO 1200. Usually the negative side of the peel apart films--other than types 665, 55 and 51--are pretty worthless, but with this film you can get a latent image from the opaque negative, although it takes some PS tweaking to get it to be viewable.

I posted the positive of this picture before (actually it was the first post!) (http://www.largeformatphotography.info/forum/showthread.php?88040-Polaroids-%28and-Fujiroids%29), but tonight tried for the first time clearing the back of the negative with bleach as has been discussed online quite a bit. Results are pretty impressive. Negative is actually wicked sharp. Colors are good. Kinda hard to control but good. Other negatives with colors that were not as good in the positive were way, way off in the negative.

I used toilet bleach that's kind of a gel, it sits on the back of the picture better. Stole that from somewhere.

Luke & Bryan,

Thanks. But you should have seen me scramble to get the shot! I saw the light hitting the vase on the table, but I had to clear ALL the other crap off the table first, and there was a lot of it, so a bunch just got tossed on the floor since the light was fading fast. Then I had to center the vase in the light, set up the camera, mount the lens, focus, figure out how to meter it (that was really tricky--thank goodness for spot meters), and at the last minute I could not find my box of type 64 film. But it all worked out in the end. Whew!

By the way, that dark mass at center left that I sort of wish weren't there? That's the Century 8x10. I rolled it as far out of the way as I could, but that was the best I could do in the time I had.

I also shot a few sheets of TMX right after this, so we'll see how they turn out in comparison.

Looking forward to the TMX!

I decided to bring my Polaroid 900 conversion to work today and practice manual flash calculations and framing/focusing handheld. 11/11 came out well! Here are a couple of my favorites, shot on Fuji 100C with a Nikon SB-800 for flash. Sorry the "scans" suck, I don't have a working scanner so these are shot with a DSLR, yuck! They are gorgeous in the hand. I've been so afraid of shooting the color stuff, being slow, inside, but it worked great with the flash!

Bryan,

Those look good, especially for hand held and rangefinder focused. The Fuji certainly has good color rendition compared to the old Polaroid stuff. When I shoot the Fuji I am always surprised at how good the color really is when exposed properly. Almost too good for my purposes.

Was there a soft box on the flash or was it bounced? Looking at the reflection in the camera lens in the first one I'm thinking bounced.

Corran
19-Sep-2012, 16:35
Yep, just a straight bounce, full-power with the lens set to f/5.6 or so depending. The colors looks great, especially after drying for about an hour. Right after pulling, the Fuji is too red and a little yellow, but it changes to just about perfect. The background is a little yellow-green because of the fluorescents. I guess I should gel the flash and use a color-correction filter, but that's too much trouble for casual shots.

I love the one of my mentor; I am going to reclaim the negative and try a silver print for him.

Judging by the topmost pic, I'd say you've just found your calling. Maybe you better experiment with whatever film you like, when you can consistantly get results like this 2 out of 3 shots, you'll be in demand as a photographer. There is no doubt in my mind you interact very well with the models. That one would have looked even better shot on Plus-X. Kodak no longer makes it, but it's around and can be had.
About time I posted something rather than just lurking.

I still haven't got up the courage to actually load some "proper" sheet film into holders, so up to now my LF forays have all been Polaroid and Fuji.

For one thing, it prevents having the face in the "bull's-eye" part of the frame, and personally I find it more visually appealing.

Can you provide a link or something? I searched quickly but didn't see anything.

I really wish the guys from New55 would start taking it a bit more seriously as what they're trying to do sounds quite exciting. Heck, if I thought I actually had some skill set that could be of use I'd even volunteer to work with them if I could...I want it to come back!

EdSawyer

The problem with new55 is they are unfunded, and don't seem inclined to take it to the next level funding-wise. If they had the capital and someone to run the show they could get into production, I'd think, based on their results so far.

adelorenzo
24-Jan-2013, 11:39
New55 seems like a natural fit for Kickstarter. If the interest is there, you raise startup capital and are guaranteed sales of your first batch of film in one go. When you look at how much 10+ year old stuff goes for on eBay it seems like there is some money to be made there.

For those of you who didn't catch it 20x24 studios has also been hinting at a run of 4x5 polacolor sheet film (https://www.facebook.com/20x24Studio/posts/10151416252218417).

EdSawyer

Bob at new55 has posted his reasons for not going with kickstarter in the past. Frankly, I think if funding can be arranged w/o kickstarter they would be better off. less people to satisfy, less fees probably, etc. Indeed, the market is definitely there, esp. since Fuji discontinued FP100C45 a while ago.

I posted the negative scan of this a little while ago in the 'Still Life' thread, but here is the more sepia toned positive. I took a sheet of type 53 that expired in 1993 whose chemical pods had completely dried out and transplanted in a fresh pod from some 100 Sepia pack film. It works pretty well, although understandably it produces a very warm toned print. You can see at the bottom where the smaller pack film reagent pod doesn't cover fully. Still, it's nice to be able to bring some old film back from the dead. The mottled texture is from condensation that accumulated on the film, probably from being frozen and thawed a few times in its life.

Not meant to be a great picture, merely just an experiment as all my online research says it's impossible and wouldn't work....

Type72 in Ilford multigrade dev
After discovering that the chem pods in my polaroids were dried up, I decided to stick the negative in Ilford multigrade paper developer to see what happens :)
Didn't measure temp or time it as I dev'ed by inspection, 1+14 solution
Inverted in PS after scanned on a 4990

Striking portrait! I like the background color, too.

@all: nice pictures :)
I have a question: Recently, I was given a lot of expired polaroid 554 B/W film. I also acquired a 550 back, so I could use the film. So far I've had good results, even considering the films expired in 2003 and never has been refrigerated. BUT - there's always a but - I can't seem to scan them properly. Are there any general guidelines for scanning polaroids, that I've missed? I have a HP Scanjet G4050 which I got used for a ridiculous price and it works very good with my regular negatives (both B/W and colour). I use the vuescan software with it.
Thank you for any input :)

I finally got some 8x10 polaroid to play with! 9 year expired 804, shot on my deardorff V8 and with my new-to-me very worn Kodak Ektar 14" Commercial lens I picked up for $20. It was a good weekend for me.

I've been goofing around with Fuji Instax Wide in my Crown Graphic just to see if I could.

Not a great photo, but it works! Now to find some better subject matter.

Great idea. Are you just taping the single Instax frame into the film holder? And to process do you just break the reagent pods by hand with a roller or do you insert it back into the Instax camera for processing?
