View Full Version : Arista.edu Ultra 400 light line down one side.

I just shot 12 sheets of Arista.EDU Ultra 400 today and after processing, all of my negs have a uniform light (clear) line (not a scratch) going down the long side. I was wondering if anyone has seen this before, knows what it could be, or knows of any problems like this with the film.

It is like what may happen if a roller spread out or rubbed off some of the emulsion on one side exactly parallel with the long edge of the sheet on the notch side. The line is about 1.5mm wide and is exactly 6mm from the edge on every sheet. Exposure is fine on both sides of the line and it is far enough in that the film holder doesn't reach it.

At first I thought light leak, but quickly realized this would result in a dark line, not a light one. By chance, one of my films was cocked a bit to one side in the holder. The line from the film holder is at an angle to the edge of the film, but the problem line is still exactly parallel with the edge. This leads me to believe that the problem is with the film and not me.

Also, I am processing with the Mod54 and Paterson 3 reel setup, so any problem with that would shift sides depending on which sid of the reel the films are locked into. I use the inversion method from the Mod54 sight, not rotating.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be very welcome!

Thanks,
Jim

I'd vote that it is a problem in the manufacturing of Arista EDU Ulta 400 (rebranded Forte?).

process a blank sheet, see what you get

To do this, would I fog it under room light, and then process normally?

I recently shot a box of Efke PL100 9x12cm film that had this issue. Every sheet had a very faint light streak down the length of the film near the edge. It was not my equipment so I concluded it was a manufacturing defect. The next box I used had no such problem.

no, just go from the box to the developer. why not expose one to room light as well for the hell of it.

Thanks! I have been shooting these for class and I don't think it will affect my shooting out the rest of this box. I am using the Arista premium developer and my negs are super grainy. I ordered some R09 Rodinal from freestyle to see if there is a difference in how the film responds. I hope to be able to continue to use this film because of the great price point, but it seems that I may be getting what I paid for (if you know what I mean). I will finish out this box and probably get another, but I am thinking of picking up a smaller box of HP5 as well for comparison.

Thanks for the advice, I will try this as soon as I get my new developer from freestyle. I just ran out of the arista premium and I am going to try the Rodinal R09 next. I'll let you all know how it goes!

Does it look anything like that? Not sure why I got that, doesn't seem to be on the other pictures from the same batch. I was kind of assuming it was light reflecting off something in the camera, but on second thought, this is a nice Toyo G, not sure why that would be happening.

This is Foma 400/Arista.edu

Yes! Exactly like that. With the exception that mine is on the long (notch) side in stead of the short side like yours. It must be a manufacturing thing. Not all of the sheets from this box were doing it either. I am about 30 sheets into a 50 sheet box, and only this last dozen or so have it.

P.S. Nice shot! I love bridges and old railroad tank cars (and similar) for their lovely rivets!

you thought it was grainy before, wait til you run it through rodinal!
do a search here for other developers that would get the results you're after. I think most folks also rate this film at 200.

Actually, upon further inspection, I realize that the size and placement of your line is similar, but you have a light line on a positive image (dark on the neg, right?) while mine is a light line on the neg (dark line on the positive). ??? Weird!

I thought Rodinal was suposed to be one of the best out there? Oh well, my new bottle just showed up and I am going to try the stand (or semi-stand development) for my night photography. Even if I get similar or more grain, the low ratio and long shelf life make the Rodinal a very economical choice for me. Do you have better suggestion, that wouldn't require me to turn my bathroom into a chem lab? (I have small children, pets, and no $$$ for a nice chem scale).

Here is my line on the left vertical. I'm not showing the full frame because I used the scanning frame that came with my V700.

you sure that's not on the background you were shooting against? I would have thought it was the wall.

Yep! I have a dozen photos from at least 4 different camera positions and angles and the line is in the exact same spot on each one.

As long as it is ok for me to crop in, I don't think this line will be too big a problem. If anyone is interested, here is the final edit of this neg.
