I have a few that I like very much.Imogen Cunningham, Gertrude Kasebier and Ruth Bernhard are at the top of my list. But the one woman photographer that I have always admired the most is Annie W Brigman. When I first saw her pictures I was blown away. I still am. Soul of the Blasted Pine was the first one I came across on one rainy day a long time ago when I was hanging out at my local library checking out photography books all day. Some day , hopefully soon, I can look at an original print of hers on a wall somewhere. I can only imagine how beautiful it will be.

Tough one. Off the top of my head I'd say Judith Joy Ross, Ellen Von Unwerth, and my dear Julia. There are many I didn't name that I also admire, but favorites lists should be short, I think.

Lillian Bassman and Julia Margaret Cameron are first on my list. I also like Maggie Taylor's work but have not scene enough to really appreciate her work enough.
I am a fan of Vivian Maier but the book that was published was so poorly produced that I can only imagine how great her prints would look.

I can only imagine how great her prints would look.
I just saw a batch of prints of her work - here:
http://www.jacksonfineart.com/exhibitions_current.php
These are from the Goldstein collection of her work (original prints and negatives) vs the Maloof collection. Most of the prints in the exhibit for sale were contemporary prints (not vintage made during her life) although there were a handful of smallish prints that were vintage available for sale. I attended the opening for her show at the Jackson Fine Art gallery and there was wall to wall people attending the opening with some very interested buyers of her work. I thought the contemporary prints were over priced at $1800 each though for serious well healed collectors this would probably be a good price point with room to negotiate a price cut if they were serious.
The print quality of the vintage prints weren't that great, at least IMO, and certainly over priced at $3000, however 10 or 15 years from now that price maybe considered a bargain.
More of her work online here:

HANSEL MIETH deserves mention
I am usually a thread ender:
So let's not forget Ruth Harriet Louise, One of the first and Possibly only female hollywood studio photographer.
As to Franks thread and the discussion of sex/race, I think that there is more to our appreciation of a photographer than the photograph. The life and effort and circumstances the photographer faced are a large part of our appreciation.

Paula Chamlee, a friend who is one of the finest photographers around. Works mainly in large format, develops by inspection and contact prints images that sing. Her books are very good with High Plains Farm showing what one can do with the 5x7 and 8x10 camera on location. Lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, photographer Michael A. Smith.
Paula does have a great eye and a sweet person to boot!

Unless I missed it, surprised no one has mentioned Eve Arnold who recently passed away. And her recent book "All About Eve" is excellent.
My favorite are Berenice Abbott, and Laura Gilpin, wonderful large format work.

I really love the work of Imogen Cunningham. I had the privledge of spending a day with her at her home in 1975. What a great day talking with her and looking at her negatives and listening to her stories.
I'm also a big fan of Dorothia Lange and Margaret Bourne White to name just a few.

I liked the photographs made by Fay Godwin, but AFAIK, she worked with medium-format rather than large-format.

I am so glad I started this thread. I have , as I am sure so many others have as well, learned so much about so many women photographers that I did not know before.

My favourite female photographer is probably Fay Godwin, with Imogen Cunningham coming in second place. Perhaps tied with Susan Meiselas.
My favourite female inspirations branch off quickly into other arts. Abstract painters/designers like Brigit Riley and Sonja Delaunay figure hightly, as does Gwen John's quiet portraiture and Barbara Hepworth's scultures.
My bookmarks list has about a 70-30 male-female mix. I don't really mind if the photographers use large format, but I tend to collect (virtually) photographs which could of been made with a slow camera on a tripod, and which, more importantly, reward a bit of thought and contemplation.
