I have a black and white portraiture project and the subject is a teenager with a lot of pimples. I'm wondering if an orange filter would help tone down the redness.

Probably so. Maybe light yellow/orange. So much depends on her overall complexion and your lighting. You'll have to try it to see.

Red, too and also IR. Try green or blue lipstick as well.

Photoshop works best and most direct!
Softar filters, light diffusion filters, etc.

You can often overexpose the skin and blast a lot of the little stuff away.

The main thing in the past for it was a SF lens like an Imagon, Universal Heliar, Velostigmat, etc.
Only for the huge ones you need then still PS!

I always use a red filter or orange filter in this situation. As mentioned, for a female subject where the lips would be emphasized, I will apply a green lipstick to the subject so the lips do not appear white..

IR works well but it can make people appear... weird... Some skin tones will come out looking utterly horrible (almost horror movie material)

I have never had a situation where a red filter didn't either suitably tone down the spots or indeed remove them all together.
