Does anyone know what the difference is between a Nikon W series large format lens with the "S" and one without it.

Together "SW" stands for Nikkor LF wide angle lenses. The "W" is standard angle Plasmat.

John is asking about the compact plasmat W in a newer vs older shutter, not the big wide angle SW. See the linked thread.

The circular surrounded "s" has nothing to do with the Nikon lens, itself. It appears on the shutter.

It indicates the latest version of the Copal 0 shutter.

OH, i see. Now that makes better sense.

The Circled S on the Copal 0 shutter indicates seven aperture blades,
rather than five as was standard for Copals at the time.

I should have detailed my question and specified that I meant the circled "S" on the shutter. Thanks Leigh.
