Hey,

I've got a rodenstock grandagon mc 65mm f4.5 (67mm thread). I was just wondering what center filter is recommended for this lens?

Thank you all greatly for your help
Kyle

You should chect the Rodenstock web site or B&Ws site.

The 65mm Grandagon-N 4.5 has a 58mm front thread and needs the 170001 Rodenstock Center filter. Or you can use the Heliopan 705851 Center Filter. B+W, not B&W, do not make center filters and your lens does not use 67mm filters unless it has somehow been modified.

My lens does use a 67mm filter and it has not been modified.

Thank you both for your help.

And I have a B&W Center filter for my 90 Super Angulon. Got it when B&W was a year old.

Could it have a filter adapter or stepping ring installed? The Rodenstock literature does state that the filter ring for the 65/4.5 Grandagon-N is 58mm:

Apo-Grandagon ......... Filter thread ... Exp. correction
& Grandagon-N ........................... f-stops / time
35 mm f/4.5 ............. E 67/86 ....... +2.5 .... 5×
45 mm f/4.5 ............. E 67/86 ....... +2.5 .... 5×
55 mm f/4.5 ............. E 67/86 ....... +2.5 .... 5×
65 mm f/4.5 ............. E 58/77 ....... +1.5 .... 3×
75 mm f/6.8 ........... * E 58/77 ....... +1.5 .... 3×
75 mm f/4.5 ............. E 67/86 ....... +1.5 .... 3×
90 mm f/6.8 ............. E 67/86 ....... +1.5 .... 3×
90 mm f/4.5 ............. E 82/112 ...... +1.5 .... 3×
115 mm f/6.8 .......... * E 82/112 ...... +1.5 .... 3×

* discontinued

Now, the 75/4.5 Grandagon-N does indeed use a 67mm filter. Are you sure there is not a typo somewhere? Or, Bob, was there an exception version ever made?

The OP said he has a Grandagon, not a Grandagon-N. It's convenient to assume that nothing fundamental changed when the letter designation was appended, but IIRC there was at least one instance in recent Rodenstock history where the mount changed - I think it was between generations of one of the Apo-Sironar(-W) series. Perhaps that happened with one or more of the Grandagons too.

That was when it was owned by Berman and Weber but they died many years ago and the company was run by trustees until it was sold to Mandermann who incorporated it into his group of companies which included Schneider that he bought when they went into receivership.
B+W has not made a center filter for decades at this point.

Oren,

He said that he has a mc Grandagon 65mm 4.5. Going back to the 1975 Rodenstock brochure for the Grandagon the 65mm did have a 67mm front thread but that lens was not mc.
The 1985 brochure also shows it at 67mm but that lens was also not an mc per the literature.

Checking current inventory the 65mm 4.5 Grandagon-N is a 58mm mount.

If he does have an older version that does have a 67mm front thread then the proper center filter from Heliopan is the 170002 with a 1.5x correction. The other 67mm, the 170005 with a 2.5x correction should not be used with a 65mm. The Heliopan 706751 center filter will also work.

I have a 155 Grandagon (non-N) MC with a serial number that dates it to around 1980. So it may be that the brochures are not complete or correct as a guide to the timing of the MC transition.

Anyway, with the extra information you've provided, the OP should be set for whatever version he has. :)

Thank you all. And yes it's a 67mm filter, Rodenstock Grandagon MC 65mm f4.5. It was made in 1984, serial number 10235800.

Bob Salomon, given that it is an MC but is not an N, could I still use one of the center filters you suggested?

Thank you again everybody.

Yes you can.

1984 Rodenstock serial numbers are in the 10,5xx,xxx range. 10,235,800 is a 1980 lens and could even be a late 79 lens as 10,000,000 was 1979 and 10,300,000 was a 1981 lens. These are production date numbers and not dates that the lenses reached distribution for sale. Some lenses could have been originally sold at retail a couple or more years after they were numbered at the factory.

Thank you, the source that I used for serial numbers must have been incorrect.
