I was just cleaning out a cabinet and came across a box of Plus X that I didn't know was in there. The expiration is 07/2003. The box is still sealed and it has been stored inside of the cabinet since I bought it.
Do you think the film is still useable or should I just scrap it?

Unusable. Mail it to me for proper disposal.
I found a roll in my trunk once that was about ten years past. It was fine.

My experience with Plus-X is that it keeps very well even under less than ideal storage.
I have a couple of 4x5 boxes Exp. 99 that was stored in a garage in San Diego and it is perfect.
Also shooting some 2004 Exp. in 35mm that looks like the day it was made.

Good to know. I was primarily concerned because this film has not been refrigerated.

It will still be OK.

Now if it were Velvia... That would be a different story. ;)

I'm still using some plus-x from 2003-2006. I'm on the last rolls and I can't tell the difference in base fog from my 2011 stuff.

The film isn't worth using anymore.

Just send it to me, I'll dispose of it properly. ;)

My belief is that the film expire date, especially B&W film, is something for the mfgr. to CYA. I use B&W film that's at least 10 years beyond expire that work just fine. The higher ISO film's tend to fog a wee bit but they still work for me. Color film is another story. But since I use very little color film any more I shouldn't comment. When I used color film I tended to keep enough to last a few gigs then order more as I tended to follow the expire dates!

Clear as mud!
