Interesting film showing Edward Weston at work.

Nice little piece at 20 minutes of him in his darkroom.

Likewise, I had no idea this existed. Fantastic film, even though it was towards the end for him.

Try http://www.amazon.com/THE-PHOTOGRAPHER-1948/dp/B000UWE8UG to buy the DVD. Note the revue in the ad. I have an earlier edition of both the DVD and the VHS. They are well worth the money for Weston fans, although the B&W film photography isn't great. I understand Weston was experimenting with Kodachrome at the time the film was made. This film has been discussed by knowledgeable people on this site before. Searching for enlightenment may be worthwhile.

Nice film, great to see the view camera and an 14in Commercial Ektar in action, as natural as can be.

Who was his attractive assistant (or was she just in for the film)? I was wondering if she did some focusing for him. It seemed almost as he directed the general framing, then she focused and then Weston himself did the final framing.

I love how they shlepped the old card board suitcase around. Non of that plastic backpack crap!

It's amazing that you can shoot with exactly the same gear today!

Thanks Merg, I open the old link and got the answers with regards to the "assistant".

The idea is excellent however!

That was great. It's interesting that even in 1948, the narrator refers to Weston's camera as "old fashioned."

Sure does not look like Amidol developer in the darkroom sequence.

you know...maybe that was filmed under infrared for "real" developing, you know...the faces looked washed out kind of in the darkroom scene

I thought at first it was "faked" but...hey...maybe the amidol looks different under IR illumination?

I want to say thank you for the links to this film, I have watched it twice. Brilliant documentary.

Got any more of similar quality? Any on Ansel Adams?

The Ansel Adams gallery http://www.anseladams.com/ offers the Ric Burns PBS posthumous documentary and the more interesting (to me) 1981 60 minute video produced by Andrea Gray and John Huzar. The latter includes human moments of Adams in the darkroom and playing the piano. I've seen the shorter 1957 made for TV video, but don't know of a source at this time. It included a scene of him loading his 8 passenter Cadillac (with platform on the top) with this gear:

1 8x10 view camera with 20 holders and 4 lenses: Cooke convertable, 10" Wide Field Ektar, 9" Dagor, 6.75 wide angle Wollansak

7x17 special panoramic camera with five holders & 13.5" Protar lens

4x5 view camera with six lenses: 12" Voigtlander Collinear in Compound shutter, 8.5" Apo-Lanthar, 9.5" C. P. Goertz Apo-Artar in Ilex Synchro shutter, 9.25" Apo Tessar, 4" Wide Field Ektar, Dallmeyer 8-on telephoto

Hassleblad camera with 38, 60, 80, 135, and 200mm lenses

Contaflex 35mm camera outfit

two Polaroid cameras

SEI exposure meter and two Weston meters

Filters for each camera: K1, K2, Minus Blue, G, X1, A, C5, B, F, 85B, 85C and light balancing series 81 & series 82

Two tripods; one light, one heavy

lens brush, Stop watch, level, thermometer, focusing magnifier, & focusing cloth

Heicolight strobe portrait outfit with 200' cable

special storage box for film

The 1957 video was made while Ansel was still living in the family home in San Francisco. It was linked on this forum a few years ago, I believe; perhaps a search will bring it up.

A later TV documentary was made by a local station (KRON) in 1968 after Ansel moved to Carmel. It is not of the greatest quality but might be of interest to Ansel fans:

Fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing that. Even though Weston is one of my great idols, until now I'd never even seen the man move!

And now I feel inspired to go load up some film holders-tomorrow I'm getting out of this damn office and going into the larger world.
