I just processed my first 14x17 negs with D-76 in trays...Here are some details of the NEGATIVES - white spots/lines I got on each of the 2 negatives. Can you tell me if these are dust or scratches on the negs? I loaded in a bathroom, which may have been too dusty and tray processed each separately, but maybe scratched them, as was my first time doing this. Thanks!

David,
I am just getting back into tray processing and can give a little help. in neg one and two you have scratched the emulsion while agitating...a little practice with blank film and you should get the hang of scratch free agitation. Negative 3 to me looks like uneven agitation.
I am sur you will get advice from far more expierenced practioners than me!
Hopes this helps a little. Ebjoy the adventure!
Best
Bruce

I just noticed that my trays have some "rough" spots on them where they are bevelled...probably scratched.

Some thoughts on the obvious

1. film in tray emulsion side up
2. even gentle agitation all the way through entire process
3. short smooth finger nails...I forgot about mine at first.

David,

What film are you using? Pehaps lith film or Xray film, if so these type of films are even more scratch prone than "normal" film..

best,
