Hello,

I have a simple question: I have a 4x5 enlarger which has a negative carrier with two panes of glass built in. Accoring to Saunders/LPL, the bottom pane is regular glass and the top pane is anti-Newton ring glass.

Are there any issues with simply using Kodak lens cleaning solution and paper in cleaning these glass surfaces? If there is, what kind of approach to cleaning is recommended? It's the first time that I have wanted to clean the panes on the carrier and I am leary of making an irreversible mistake.

Many thanks, Robert

I've used pec12 and pec pads to clean the anti-newton glass in glass holders with no problems. No experience with the kodak lens cleaner, but suspect it would probably go ok.

Anti-Newton glass is shaped not coated so any lens cleaner should be fine. I recommend a Zero Stat gun to get and keep your glass clean (static free) after the wet wash. The real hazard is that tiny charge!

Your gonna love what flat film does for enlargement.

Cheers!

"Invisible Glass", advertised in Better Homes and Gardens, is a truly remarkable cleaner which works quite differently from other products. It is available at some auto parts stores (sold to detailers) or directly on-line at:

Somebody I trusted, I forget who, said to never use paper to clean any photography glass because it can scratch. An old, well-washed T shirt works very well. Apart from that, any glass cleaner that doesn't leave a residue should work fine.
