So I recently went to replace some sync cords and since I no longer have a viable, well-stocked camera shop within 250 miles, I can no longer look at actual stocked products on the shelf.... And I suddenly realized that what I thought were PC Sync Socket Female and Male appear to be reversed. Looking at the photos, I am lost in gender confusion....

The sync protrusion, the erect, extended, turgid little piece of metal sticking out of my Copal shutters and/or safely protected off the side of my Nikon appears to be considered a "female" while the part that engulfs, receives, and surrounds the little guy is referred to as "male".

I am in crisis.

So the PC socket sticking out of our cameras and lenses is female and the stinking socket that always gets funky on the $14 cord is the male - CORRECT?

So confused....

It won't matter to the cord, it has both. One on each end. Just flip so it's gender neutral.

Things that stick out TAKE the female side. Things that receive TAKE the male end. I learned that while visiting a photography/porno shop. We don't have those any more.

Frank... you are the last person I thought would ever have gender identity isses!

Frank,

The gender of a connector is based on the center conductor.

If it's a pin, the entire connector is male. If it's a socket, it's female.

Digital Den is well stocked and not far from you.
And the cord plug that fits it is a female PC socket. The part that it plugs into is a male PC socket.
