Hey,

So I've done a post at scan-hi end already. But I figured some of you might have an answer here.

I'm familiar with the ScanMate 8k and 11k scanners but not the Howtek scanners.

1) What's the difference between a D4500 and a SM4500?

2) Software for these scanners seems limited (as you would expect). Trident, DPL and supposedly Silverfast. Trident is not supported anymore, hard to find and $900 new (requires a OS9 machine). DPL is $1500 for the SM4500 software but only $500 for the D4500 software. SIlverfast says that 6.6 can work with D4500 but makes no mention of SM4500. I'm wondering if I can use the SM4500 with either Silverfast or the cheap version of DPL.

3) Are there any other options out there to run these scanners?

Thanks

I assume they are the same scanners, but you could call Azteck to make sure.

I think you are getting confused with the naming conventions. . . . either that or I am :D

Typically "SM" refers to the ScanMate product, which is different scanner line from than that of the Howtek line. If the "SM" 4500, as you refer to it, is a Howtek product, then it is a ScanMaster 4500 or a "D4500" (as it is often referred). Same is true for the "D4000"; it can also be a ScanMaster 4000.

The two Howtek scanners are very similar in capabilities (4000 dpi, 3.9-4.0 d-max, etc). The drums, however, are slightly larger on the 4500 series and cannot be used interchangeably with the 4000 series. . . same is true with the mounting stations.

As for the software, if you really want to avoid using the older Aurora or Trident, which requires older hardware and OS versions, you will need to look at the SilverFast product.

Best Regards,
Michael
