Pseudo-meniscus half-Petzval.

I.e. remove the rear set, then put the front lens in the back?
What's the original focal length?

Don't know if this qualifies as a portrait. Mr. George Hairston wondered up to inquire what I was taking pictures of (neighborhood watch?). He proceeded to tell me some history of the local farm lands. He was kind enough to put his beer down long enough to pose. Promised him I would get him a print. Will drop one by tomorrow.

"Hairston's" came to Virginia back in the 1730's. I believe any blacks with that name can be traced back to slaves on the Hairston plantations.

Lighting was bad, on top of that, I underexposed by at least a stop :(

With a Meyer Gorlitz Trioplan 210/4.5 I obtained via a trade on the classifieds here. Can't seem to find much about it online; it's a nice triplet though, with a buttery smooth aperture made of lots of blade.

Not exactly breaking new ground for portraits, but I wanted to test the lens out and the light was nice, getting kinda low filtering through the trees. Bribed the kids with a late afternoon snack if they posed for the test shots.

Pre-anniversary speed graphic with focal plane shutter, TMY2 film in PMK.

Sharp face details, ears and some hair out of focus, wonderful background blur; the leaves and branches were only about 2' behind.

Thanks; That's real close with that link. A tiny bit newer styling, but uncoated and the 210/4.5 seemed to be discontinued in the 50's catalog on their site. Mine might be a tiny bit newer than the 1936.

dcypher, all four images are very good. Two questions:
- Is it all natural lighting?
- On the last two images: did you tilt the lens to get the face and part of the background in focus and the body out of focus?

Greetings, Thomas

dcypher

Yes,Thomas. All natural light. I tilted the lens to put the focus on the face. It creates a more intimate image, imo. Less attention to the (covered) nudity.

I'm going to guess, and be corrected later, maybe.

I think it's two soft boxes, one above and one below the subject. If you look at the catch lights in her eyes, you can see the larger reflection in the bottom, and just slightly see the reflection on the top of the pupil. Two catch lights, two lights (not always true, but I think it is here...)

Beautiful lighting and image. Love it!

Thx guys!

Correct Graham, big softbox under and small one above at -1EV. although there's not supposed to be a second catchlight  I couldn't get close enough with the upper softbox. I don't like more than one catchlight.

Maybe not a "portrait" in the traditional sense… but trying to emphasize how I see this friend of mine… 8x10, Verito. Lith print, iron blue toned.

That's a toss-up for me - I think the slightly-soft focus on the face is probably a good thing, but the hands being sharper is ultimately distracting. I always try to focus on the eye when shooting a portrait. Sometimes that's tough, depending on the lighting.

Regardless of whether the focus was deliberate or an accident, I find the photograph provocative. Not only is it not flawed, the approach could lead to an interesting series. I like Scott's photographs of his kids a lot, but focusing on the eyes is conventional, whereas this may open a door to something that goes beyond convention.

DUDE...THAT's the pic to use the olde lens tilt you were using before--you could have got them both tack sharp....with f16 or less----I guess you were not thinking..."under stress" and didn't have time to figure it out......next time next time......

oh--yeah---she's right---it's not flattering--get her from a different angle---underneath is not the look for most people I've found unless you get them with their face from the side...not srraight on---you end up looking up their nose straight on...unless you wanted the "looking down her nose at you" effect, that is.....even then, I'd get it from more of her head turned, you know...so you get a little shape in the nose....

or use me for a model--I'm good from any angle---I'm just that hawt...

Somehow I missed that part - congratulations David!

You said she was pissed, really, right after accepting your proposal? Or was she pissed that the next thing you did was drag out the 8x10 Deardorf? ;)

My fiance and I were both too giddy to photograph even if I had the Linhof, which I didn't. Shot a photo of the ring on her hand with the iPhone to share later and that was about the extent of my photo thinking ability for a while. A friend who does digital pretty seriously shot a few when we made the announcement to friends, but this does give me an idea that should have occurred to me but didn't until now. They make a self timer thing that attaches to an LF lens release socket, don't they?

Thank you both. As you may have seen I use Lori as a very reluctant model. She hates all things camera; especially the big cameras!

I lured her to the trainyard under the pretex of another semi-nude photo shoot then I kept posing and reposing here saying we are missing somthing...then out with the ring :)

She was shocked.

About a week and a 1/2 from now we will have some more PICs up that are really for the engagement. They involve VERY large format, Lori and I, NYC and a well know forum member :)

Sounds cool!

My fiance likes my photography, in fact it was she who spurred and reignited my interest when we got together as she's a big fan of art. Sometimes our house looks like more of a gallery and she only has a fraction of her collection hanging (and two of my old ones, I just printed a few and had mounted so they may end up on the walls too.) She likes my photos of her too, but I don't have any LF to share yet, only shot one. I have several good ones in MF that I haven't printed yet except on a contact sheet. I'll get to them soon and they may turn up in the safe haven for tiny formats thread.

I have some of the night we announced the engagement to our friends, but they were even smaller format, shot by a friend on digital (pretty serious digital photog though, definitely not a digisnapper - I forget what his new camera is, he lost his Canon DSLR to a mugger as he was going in to a cemetery to shoot!)

4x5 Arca-Swiss, 210mm 5.6 Symmar-S Schneider lens, Kodak Portra 400 (New).

This is a portrait I made of a former undergrad professor of mine while I visited him at his home. He is Professor Emeritus, Political Science at the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. He grew up in "El Barrio" in New York, was involved in the civil rights movement as a young man, and marched with MLK. He earned a scholarship to The City University if New York, where he completed his undergraduate studies. He then went on to earn a PhD in Political Science from The University of Wisconsin, Madison, focusing on Latin American politics. He's had a major influence on my life.

I really like it Michael W. Questions - about how far was your subject from the lens? About how much bellows extension?
The bellows was 450mm with the 300mm lens. I remember measuring and adding one stop of light to compensate. I didn't think to measure how far away the sitter was - approx 2 feet I'd guess.

Yes, a meniscus lens...
Kalosat 18"

I guessed as much - but it was not for me to say/suggest!
The 600mm Plasticca is on it's way to Oslo via personal courier - but the results will turn up in next month's portraits I guess. A comparison with the Kalosat would be interesting!

These are scans of prints from a Beseler. Both are with flash. I can't tell you any shot settings as I don't remember. Film was Kodak TRX 320 however as I still have some in my fridge.

Thanks Domingo, the client didn't like the acting.

Yeah, I don't know what is going on there. I expected more coverage although I suspect there's some kind of light leak or irregular exposure. The Speed Graphic bellow 1/125 is worthless.
I've got some 8x10s with a B&L Tessar that came out nice.

Amboy White Stallion

Brings back memories. In 1997, I stopped in Amboy at Roy's gas station and decided to have a meal. I chatted with another patron who seemed vaguely familiar. It took me a while to realize it was Harrison Ford. I had my 4x5 with me and considered asking for a photo, but then figured the poor man probably gets too many such requests. And what use would I have for a Harrison Ford portrait, after all? So we just finished our hot dog/burger respectively and went our ways.
