I'll be visiting San Francisco during the next week, and was wondering if anyone could suggest worthwhile galleries to visit, especially where one might find good b&w photography (LF or otherwise).

So far, I know about SF MOMA, Fraenkel and Pier 24. Any further suggestions?

Scott Nichols, Robert Kotch, and Frankel Galleries are a never miss when I'm in SF. Although not a "Large Format" gallery, Nichols probably has the most LF work. All of these are at 49 Geary. A short few blocks away you can find "Gallery 291" at 291 Geary. All excellent galleries worth some time.

I suggest you find out the photographers each gallery represents. Call ahead and arrange a viewing of the ones you are most interested in.

I hope this helps.

I was just about to recommend Modernbook. Also worth stopping in to check out is Robert Tat (also in 49 Geary). The last time I was in there he was showing an exhibit of (anonymous) vernacular photographs from his own collection. It was everything from tintypes to 1940's glamour portraits. I also found him to be the most accessible of the galleries there - I actually got to talk directly with Robert for a good 45 minutes about the work on display and his approach to collecting.

Pier 24 requires a reservation, www.pier24.org/

you get a 2 hour session, and is a huge gallery, you will likely need the entire 2 hours to really see it all.
Great place!

You should also check out Rayko Photo Center,

When I visit a gallery, I ask if they know of other photo shows, in SF there are always "cafe galleries".

My favorites are the 49 Geary galleries (Scott Nichols, Fraenkel, Stephen Wirtz, Robert Tat, Modernbook), Gallery 291 (2 blocks away) and Rodney Lough (he just moved to a new gallery space new Pier 39). I haven't been to Pier 24 but am really looking forward to going.
