View Full Version : Difference between Sinar P 4x5 and 8x10

Can anyone tell me how to tell the difference between the Sinar P 4x5 front and rear standards from the 8x10 standards?

The front of the one I have has - and + 4cm of travel from a black dot. There is also a red dot 2cm above the black dot.

On the rear standard there is a red dot with a green dot that is 1.3cm above it. The scale on the rear is -3.5cm and +5cm. I get the full 5cm of rise but only about 3mm of fall.

I need to set the zeros on the red dots to align the two standards.

This leaves me with 2cm of rise on the front and I can add to that the 3mm of fall on the rear to get a total of 23mm of rise. That's not a lot to me. I would expect you would need much more for an 8x10. So I'm wondering if I have a mix of 4x5 and 8x10 standards.

Thanks
Chris

8x10 rear standard is a T, 4x5 is more of an Inverted L.

Though there are conversion kits for 4x5 to 8x10 that do work, just with limits.

Take a look at ebay 170687500048 (last picture). The bearer has more space from above the vertical slot to the horizontal piece compared to a standard 4x5. For the rear, look at 170687500048 (second picture). The horizontal piece extends past the vertical bubble level creating more of a T (as Bob stated).

What was the second listing number for the rear? It looks like a copy of the first.

I think I have an 8x10 rear with a 4x5 front.
Here are some pictures:

I would guess both are 4x5. Looking at your second to last picture, the vertical bubble at the left side is very close to the end of the horizontal piece. The special 8x10 bearers extend quite a bit further past the bubble.

The markings on your rear horizontal piece are slightly different from my 4x5. I have three index marks but the red one is immediately above the green one. The black one is almost 2cm to the right of these. Other than the very different index dots, yours looks like mine.

I guess I've been fleaybayed:( The listing said they were both 8x10 specific standards. Can't complain much since it was the cheapest 8x10 outside of the 1930's wooden cameras. I already have an F with an adapter board for all my lenses and I like the modularity of the Sinar.

If you need more shift you always can make it indirect with the whole camera tilting up and then vertical the standards again so you not get any convergence, hope my english was clear enough;--)))

Quick way to tell, though its not 100% reliable.

The P 8x10 camera almost always came with the standard bail back and not the meter back. Most conversions use the meter back..

Taking another look, your rear back does have a significant difference which probably means it is for 8x10. Your horizontal shift thumbwheel is located directly above the vertical support my thumbwheel is located to the left of the vertical support. Looks like there are a couple fairly different 8x10 backs.
