interesting minimalist landscape photos

At the doctor's office this morning I was perusing the latest Nat Geo and found an entrancing set of photos. Apparently they were all taken with an 8x10. You can find them here, under the project "Salt":

I find them beautiful, but that is certainly a matter of taste with this kind of work!

I would second that, but at least one of the shots was done stitched digital instead of 8x10. It's the first time ever I've seen pictures in NG which potentially interested me, though shots very similar to this have been done before by any number of us. A couple of the most minimalistic shots I'd like to see printed real large.

Murray is a friend of mine and it is great to see his endeavor on the salt recognized. His project and my project are very similar.

He also shoots video and interesting time-lapse and has a film of his project as well.

I like that minimalist endeavor & results too.

Kinda shows in a big way the value of the combination of craftsmanship, having a good eye for photography, and persistence resulting from being there/ready.

I'd perish for sure in that environment; I'm more of a cool weather guy.

Sorta brings to mind a more realistic version of John Paul Caponigro's color digital "landscapes", Stieglitz's Equivalents, and also spiritual meanings. E.g. various biblical characters spent a time of isolation in the desert wilderness and the Spirit was often manifested as wind (such as in Job), and they came out better for it.

Unfortunately in this age of prolific digital hocus-pocus, some of the public might not
appreciate the patience and skill required to obtain such shots. But as photographers,
our ability to actually witness and capture these rare hues consitutes an aspect of real life experience which cannot be taken away from us, regardless of whether our work is appreciated or not. The crowd that sits on their butt and merely fabricates
analagous imagery cheats themselves out of the best part.

I've talked with Murray a few times regarding his process, he's shooting digitally(MF back on tech "plate" camera), as well as 8x10 for his work he intends to go large with.

Nice guy, and knows his stuff.

They are all fantastic. I wonder how long it would take to get a catalog of incredible skies like that. Being at the right spot when the storms/clouds/colors roll in must take some knowledge, planning, and luck.
