Broken Shutter?

Hi there,

I'm in the midst of trying to sell some equipment that belonged to a family member who passed.

A lens I have has a shutter whose speed adjustment does not appear to be working correctly.

When setting the shutter to 'M' (as seen in the photos) then turning the small shutter speed wheel to different speeds, I see/hear no difference in the speed of the shutter.

Am I thinking correctly that the shutter speed is malfunctioning?

If this is malfunctioning is this type of issue repairable at a reasonable cost?

Thoughts in terms of selling, do you think having a shutter speed issue is a huge red flag for selling this lens?

I've just had the same shutter repaired, the faster speeds seemed OK but the slow ones were all around 1/5 sec, the repairmen had to make a new piston and lap and polish the cylinder, it cost nearly 100 bucks but works nicely now. You won't get very much for it with a faulty shutter. A lot of these apparently are damaged because people cock the shutter when it's set on B or T.

These shutters are simple, and your trouble can often be fixed by the owner. You can describe the problem in an ad, or try to fix it yourself. The caps on the horizontal cylinder at the top of the shutter can be unscrewed, and the cylinder flushed out with a solvent. This may fix the frequent problem of the fairly tight fitting piston getting gummed up in the cylinder. If this doesn't fix the problem, the shutter will have to be disassembled for repair.

It looks like new in the picture. Compound shutters are high quality and very repairable.

If I were forced to guess a diagnosis over the internet I would suspect that the caps on the cylinder aren't airtight, and there's no resistance for the piston.

I feel totally unqualified to repair myself. I guess I just was looking for a bit of insight into the possibility of repair of this shutter. (thanks Jim Jones!)

It's listed on Ebay now. I'm just going to let it ride and tell everyone the issue. Maybe someone more qualified than me will pick it up!
