I found this to be a very interesting article on a strange footnote in American history - a 6 foot high residential 'suburb' built on top of an airplane factory. There are a number of 1940's photos, including the 'real' Rosie the Riveter.

What a coincidence! Just a couple of days ago my neighbor brought over a stack of photos from the similar project at the Santa Monica airport. They even went so far as to construct a mock runway and airport to lure any attack away from the hidden airport. The extent of the deception was amazing.

Yes, they were hoping to confuse invading enemy fighters and bombers. Sad to see it go, but everything falls down when it's neglected long enough. It's nice that the building materials will be salvaged and recycled.

From the Shorpy (http://www.shorpy.com) archive, Here's another Rosie (and her training instructor), working at Douglas Aircraft, 1942 - in Kodachrome 4x5 by Alfred Palmer:

Those flash bulbs must have been pretty intense to make the factory lighting look so dim. Check out the saddle shoes and cooling fins in the full size (http://www.shorpy.com/node/6343?size=_original) version!
