View Full Version : Scitex Eversmart Pro II Software + Computer
Accidentally, I stumbled over a Scitex Eversmart Pro II, with Floppy ("Eversmart (pro) Parameters") and couldn't resist for 1€...
It turns on fine - but now I need a fitting computer!? Do I need an old Mac OS9.2 with a G3 or G4? Or does Mac OS X also work as long as it's PowerPc (G5)? Or can I even use a new Macbook with external SCSI? What about the Oxygen 2.3.5 Software offered on the bay? Good choice? Does it even work without a hardware dongle? Shouldn't the Pro II have Firewire instead of SCSI?
What else do I have to keep in mind?
Questions, questions, questions...

The least complicated solution is to run the scanner with OS 9.2.2 with a MAC G4. You will need to install a SCSI card, best for this scanner is the Adaptec 2906.
You could also run the scanner with one of the early versions of OSX with a SCSI to Firewire connection, but getting this to work will be more complicated.
You don't need a dongle for the software, but you do need a special calibration transparency sheet. It is tabloid size so you probably know if you have it or don't. If you don' t have the calibration sheet you will need to buy or borrow one before you can install your software because it goes through a series of diagnostics checks and must have the calibration sheet to work.
There is a Scan Hi-End forum on Yahoo with a files section from which you can download various software and installation manuals for Eversmart scanners. Several people on that list are also very knowledgeable about Eversmarts.

...Do I need an old Mac OS9.2 with a G3 or G4? Or does Mac OS X also work as long as it's PowerPc (G5)? :
ProII will work with anything PowerPC from G3 to G5 to most recent models. SCSI or Firewire. Firewire will require a SCSI to FW adapter.
SCSI is only reliably supported with up to MAC OS 9.2.2 and I hear MAC OSX 10.2 (could never find one, so no experience)
For MAC OSX 10.3 and later one must have a SCSI to FW adapater
... What about the Oxygen 2.3.5
For that you will need a PowerPC MAC with MAC OSX 10.3 and a SCSI to FW adapater
A very good software!
Since you have no software at all I think the right start would be to get a copy of compatible with ProII oXYgen. Read the HW requirements for it and get the approriate computer, OS and optionally SCSI to FW.
SergeyT.
Thank you very much.
I've ordered oXYgen 2.3.5 and go with a G5.
I need a Rotac Firewire->SCSI? Hmm, let's see where I can find one of those. Iomega not an alternative?
The calibration slide costs 250$!!!? That's insane! Any alternative (it will be hard finding someone in Germany at all)? Isn't the calibration data on the floppy? Or what is it for?
This will be a tough month...
Thanks in advance!
I've visited the yahoo-group (those still exist!?) and read some stuff over here - but it's hard to overview the messages written over all these years...

Ratoc is here : http://www.amazon.com/Systems-FR1SX-FireWire-Converter-IEEE1394/dp/B00006BANR/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1309448559&sr=8-1-fkmr0
You will also need one of those : 05860 - External SCSI-2 MD50F to SCSI-1 C50M Adapter
Where did you get the quote for the slide from?
The data on the disk is only good for as long as the scanners params and adjustments did not change since the time the calibration data was stored. The bulbs are getting older and it is hard to believe the adjustments were not affected during the move of that monster...
If you are planning on scanning slides then consider getting or making masks to fight the optical flare...more info on how to make them is on yahoo group.
What!? 120$ for this little plastic toy... And the sellers don't even send to Germany! And I need an AC-adapter...
Man, I'm getting punished for getting an Eversmart for 1€ and I'm not even sure if it works... ;-)
Does OXYgen 2.3.5 work with SCSI on an older OS?
Has anybody tried an Alternative SCSI->FW-adapter from Iomega or Belkin?
As I said, the Ratoc is not available in Germany, not even used.
Of course the calibration will be off, but I want to see if it works at all!
@SergeyT
I think the price for the slide was brought up somewhere and coming from Genesis-equipment.

I ordered my Ratoc Adapter from Ratoc´s Onlineshop. No problem. They shipped it to Germany. Georgl, you don´t need an AC-Adapter for the Ratoc. It works flawlessly with my Supreme and a G4 Quicksilver.
Juergen
Call genesis directly and you might be surprised with the price for the slide they give you ;)
Yuo still will need the slide to do any sort of scanner tests.
I second that no AC adapter is needed for Ratoc
Thanks for the advice! I will have to think about the options one moment. Rather getting an old Mac with OS9.2 and internal SCSI (the chart states "older than 2.3.5" - so it doesn't work?) or stick with the G5 + Ratoc?
I've asked for the price of the calibration slide - let's hope it's not 250$. Otherwise I would have to find one to borrow against a fee.
I seriously hope it won't be a dead end like my Howtek (which was not that cheap, actually).
Next step is done, I've ordered the Ratoc adapter - 40$ for shipping alone!
Next step is getting a G5 and the calibration slide...

I think I ended up paying about $100 US for my calibration slide. I have an Eversmart Pro (not the II)..... picked it up for about $900 along with the computer. My largest expense on it was getting a new glass .... do *not* use any solvent to clean it.. i wiped the zigzag pattern off of mine while cleaning it. That cost me $400 to get a new glass plate for it. also, i know with my software, there's an eps file of the calibration slide.. you could possibly have one printed thru that.
all in all, though, an excellent scanner. Mine has been working without a hiccup for the last 3 years, and it was *not* in mint condition when i got it.
here's a 4x5 scan .. fp4+

Jim,
What is the name of the eps file of the calibration slide. I did not realize the file was included in the application package but perhaps I have it and did not know it.
BTW, I paid $250 for my used calibration slide some five or so years ago.

hmm.. my mistake.. i've looked at that file for years now, but never opened it (Calibration Slide.eps)... i figured with a name like that.. it would be the calibration slide.
Turns out it's the DOT calibration slide, not the main one.
Sorry about the mis-information (and now am even *more* careful with my current slide. I had always figured if it got damaged I could just get that printed)
(and thanks Sandy, for giving me a reason to actually open it before I really needed a new slide)

The Ratoc FW->SCSI works fine (the Adaptec USBXChange is completely useless) with the Howtek and running it with Silverfast on my G5 and 10.4 Tiger.
Now I'm still waiting for the Software from the Ebay-Seller... Since three weeks...
@omnicow
No reaction from Genesis so far - would it be possible to get a calibration slide from you?

Thanks! I also hope the CCD-technology is more robust and the design of higher quality than the Howtek - it would be sad to have another half-functioning 70kg-monster lying around...

I went from a Howtek 4500 to this.. and have not regretted it for a moment. at the highest optical of 3175, a 66x52" print from my 4x5" negs is probably sufficient :)
I haven't tried wet mounting the negs on the Eversmart. .but there is a wet mount station that you can get for it

I bought an EverSmart Pro II from Ryan Newton (aka Omnicow) a few months ago and just want to say that Ryan is top-notch. I was initially running it on an old G4 MDD with Panther and oXYgen 2.3.5. My only complaint was that I could not save 16-bit TIFF files directly, which I knew going in. I did figure out a workflow using the DT format that would work even though it was a bit convoluted.
About a month ago Ryan emailed me to say that he had been experimenting with later oXYgen versions for running the Pro II and seemed to be having success, and offered to upgrade my software. The Release Notes say that this version is for Select II and Supreme II scanners connected to G5 or Intel based Macs running on Tiger or Leopard. I have now upgraded the G4 to Leopard and oXYgen 2.6.3, and so far all is well with my Pro II. There are limited controls available in 16-bit mode, but that may be normal, and at any rate it is not a problem since I prefer doing most corrections in PS. The only other minor thing is that I wish I could save the scans directly to a different drive, but trying to do so causes an error every time.
I hope this is of use to some of you Pro II users.

I also heard that some information from other folks too. That means I have to get an upgrade path to a newer software version that would allow me to run on Intel-Based scanner.
I guess that means you are running on an Intel based Mac Pro on Leopard (OS10.5.8) using the Ratoc FRS1X with scanning software oXYgen 2.6.3.

Evan,
No, I'm running oXYgen 2.6.3 on a G4 (last version of the MDD) with Leopard (10.5.8). The scanner is connected via FireWire using a 2nd Wave SCSI-FireWire converter which is similar to the Ratoc. I installed Leopard and oXYgen 2.6.3 on a separate internal drive, so that if I encountered problems I could easily revert to my previous setup of Panther and oXYgen 2.3.5. So far it is working well.
Based on the release notes, oXYgen 2.6.3 should work on G5 and Mac Pro (Intel) systems too, and on Tiger (10.4.x) as well as Leopard. I don't have an Intel-based Mac other than my MBP running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) which I use for everything but image-work, but I do have a G5 running Leopard (10.5.8) which is my main PS and printing workstation. I suppose I could test this version of oXYgen on that machine just to see what happens. My understanding, however, is that it is best to run the scanner on a dedicated computer to avoid software conflicts. That advice may be overly conservative unless you are running 2 or more apps, e.g. oXYgen and PS, simultaneously. I may test this hypothesis when I have some time.

Cool. Thanks for your setup information.
Funny thing, I have Version 2.6.3, BUT was not sure if my Eversmart Pro II would recognize it.
I'm currently running my Eversmart Pro II (original Firewire box is not working)
on a G4 MMD with 2 GB of RAM under OS10.4.11 Tiger. I also have PowerPC G5 Quad Core plus a MacPro. Using a Ratoc FRS1X Firewire adapter with my UltraSCSI cable. I have not had a problem iwth Creo 2.5.5 software.
Now that you have confirm it would on Version2.6.3, I will migrate over to my Mac Pro and attempt to run it there.
Thanks for your input.

Back from work, the software finally arrive so I tried the first time to run the scanner.
Specs: Eversmart Pro II + Ratoc FW->SCSI + OXYgen 2.3.5 + G5 Tiger
Still no calibration slide.
Scanner boots up, green LED on, lights on.
Software starts and says: "scanner connected not a creo brand name"
I used the SCSI-connector on the right-hand side (left-hand side is the terminator) and switched "Terminator on". Special SCSI-ID to select?
The manual I've found seems to focus on the OXYgen software?
The Yahoo-group is comprehensive, but finding useful information is a mess! (Wouldn't it make sense to gather high-end-scanner-users on a modern forum instead of keeping this outdated yahoo-group-concept alive?)
Please help!

Manuals should be on your software disc. If not email or PM me with your email and I'll be happy to send you what I have. There is quite a lot of documentation. The installation and maintenance manual is separate from the software manual and there are several other useful documents as well.
I have seen that same message ("scanner connected not a creo brand name") each time I have installed the software, and each time restarting the computer has solved the problem.
You won't be able to complete the installation without the calibration slide.
The full installation takes about an hour or more to complete.

There are many manuals for Eversmart scanners in the files section of the Yahoo forum. This includes both software and installation manuals.
Unfortunately there is not a lot of first-hand information about operating these scanners in ways for which they were not designed. It is important to remember that Eversmarts were originally made by Scitex, which became a part of Creo, in turn acquired by Kodak. Installation updates were not made available, for example, in the case of how to run an Eversmart Pro with Firewire and OS 10.6.6. The last official update for this scanner was the upgrade to Pro II statuts, which required a new logic board, a SCSI to Firewire adaptor and several software patches.
I am surprised that people spend so much time and energy trying to run vintage scanners with the latest computers and operating systems. There is no increase in scanning speed as this is determined by the logic board of the scannner, whichs tops out with about 500 mhz on a MAC G4. In my opinion the best solution by far is to pick up a cheap G4 and run the scanner with the system for which it was designed.

One of the advantages of the newer MACs and OSX is that one can quickly transfer scans from the scanner controller to editing computer over TCP. The other is that one can even run a PS on the same machine...

Sure, but the other side of the coin is that scanning is a very time intensive activity and having a computer dedicated to it is a great convenience so you don't have to tie up time on your main editing computer. And there is very little advantage in running an Eversmart Pro II in OS10.4 compared to OS9.2.2. OS 10.4 is more stable, but not necessarily so when you add the SCSI to Firewire connection for a device for which it was not originally configured. I have a dual-boot MAC G4 (OS 10.4.4 and OS 9.2.2) MAC G4 and I can not find one good reason to scan in 10.4 compared to 9.2.2.
And if immediate file transfer is a major issue one can do that via Ethernet connectivity between the two machines.
Just my opinion. People will do what they want to do but it just seems to me that folks spend a lot more time than necessary trying to run vintage scanners with the latest computers and operating systems when they could save a lot of time and money just picking up an older computer and operating system.

Sandy,
I have the same setup: OS 9.2.2 and OSX 10.3.9 actually. But I use 9.2.2 for the scanner diagnostics only, which are not available under OSX. The rest is done under OSX. It allows me to scan with the newer oXYgen, which I find being more gentle on the scanner and I can transfer my scans to my Windows PC over TCP where all editing is done.
To be able to transfer my files from OS9 to Windows over TCP I would have to buy an extra software. To the best of my knowledge there is no native support of TCP in OS9.

By using Version 2.5.5, I was able to run on OS10.4.11 and OS10.5.8. And that reason is due to limitation space in my home office. Hence no dedicated computer solely for scanning.

Could someone please tell me the basics about installing it with the ratoc? It's FW not SCSI, right? No physical Terminator but just the switch on back?

georgl, Have you run the FR1 Configuration Utility for the RATOC FR1SX adapter? I had a similar problem getting my Eversmart Supreme recognized via FR1SX a couple years ago and the solution was accomplished via the Configuration Utility.
What finally got the scanner recognized was accomplished by: Starting the FR1SX FR1 Configuration Utility > Enabling it > Rebooting the computer > Restarting the FR1 Configuration Utility > Close the FR1 Configuration Utility without disabling it > Reboot and at this point the scanner was recognized.
No idea if this is relevant to your situation, or if it would work with the ProII, but I was having the same problem with the scanner not being recognized. My installation is on a G4 867 Quicksilver, OS X 10.4.11 and oXYgen 2.5.5.

I used only SCSI with ESpro. Yes. It has switchable ON-OFF terminator inside. Usually the scanner must be switched to ID 4 or 5. There are also service IDs also but not 4 or 5. Sometimes changing connectors help I agree. The scanner workes when connected to any scsi connector in "only SCSI cofiguration".
I've tried the Ratoc Fr1utility according to Ben and indeed, something happens when it's running or I played around with it.
With the Fr1utility entirely disabled (also tried fresh reinstall of utility and OXYgen to be sure) OXYgen doesn't start because there is no scanner or creo brand name...
But when it was activated, OXYgen says:
Incompability between the scanner serial number and the scanner number in EversmartDB. Use installation procedure in Eversmart Install&Utils application.
I then try to run the utility, it starts up, I see the installation screen for a second and it crashes.
I use SCSI ID 4 after playing around with it some time, I also tried to force ID 4 with Fr1utility - no luck.
I decided for the G5+Tiger+2.3.5 because it's the last officially working combination.

Try to find an oXYgen 2.3.5.1+ for your G5 or try everything that you have on a G4.

Georgl,
As Sergey stated, if you are able to locate Scitex Scanning Software 2.3.5.1, then it will work.
I was unable to locate 2.3.5.1 and was told at the time of software upgrade, it was a direct download from Scitex's website. For those individuals who took the opportunity to burn a CD of the upgrade, then they would have it.
Having said that, I was fortunate enough to located a copy of Version 2.5.5 from Genesis Equipment along with a separate FW driver that allow my scanner to be recognized. Sometimes you might have to get an individual or technician who can help find solutions that would allow you to run your scanner without any problems.
I had no choice but to go this route, because Version Ver. 2.3.5 would not work with my G4 or G5. I am currently using OS10.4.11 Tiger on a G4 MMD with my Eversmart Pro II running Scitex Scanning Software 2.5.5 with a Ratoc FRS1X Firewire adapter.
Had I not receive direct help from Genesis Equipment (Kodak was useless as support is dead) my Eversmart Pro II would had wound up in the landfill. I thank Michael Streeter for his valuable help and advice that enable me to run my scanner again.

Great, I paid 70€ for 2.3.5 - the only choice I had at that time...
2.3.5.1 or newer, ok, might be difficult to get my hands on it in Germany...
So any help is highly appreciated!

Georgl,
The offer from Juergen for OXYgen 2.6.0 will work for you.
To Juergen: It appears that your version of OXYgen is for the Eversmart line of scanners. Does it say EVERSMART on the DVD case?
To Georgl: You will have to "clean" your HD of all elements of your software for OXygen and do a clean installation. You will have to search the archives here to delete some associated files that was created in your original installs. I think its the Eversmart Prefs in the Library. Not really sure, but if you review the archives for this OR someone who knows chimes in, you will effectively be starting form scratch once you get the new software.
The sequence for the Ratoc as describes by Ben is correct. I had to use the power adapter, so the Ratoc was not even seen by my scanner. I then followed that up with the sequence described by Ben.
Good Luck and keep us all posted.
georgl,
I have oxygen 2.6.0. It runs with my Supreme on a G4 with Tiger and with a Ratoc Firewire adapter.
I am located in Germany.
Interested?

Thank you. Was it you I contacted regarding the calibration slide? I lost track.
@Juergen
Thanks for the offer, I will get back from work on October 1st - then I could try to install the software.

Georgl,
No, I don't recall any e-mail messages form you regarding a calibration slide. I have but just one calibration slide and it came with my Pro II when I bought it.
If you are in need to purchase one, check out Genesis Equipment Marketing.
Good Luck and let us know when you do get the scanner software...

I prolongated my work a bit and I`m ready to try the scanner next week again.
So I`m still in need of a calibration slide and OXYgen 2.6.0 in Germany!
So if anybody could help me, it would be greatly appreciated!

Did you contact Ryan Newton at http://foreversmarts.com/
You will most likely have to buy a calibration slide. It is unlikely that anyone would lend you one because if it is lost they would have no way of calibrating their own scanner.

georgl,
if you pack your scanner into your car and risk a trip to me home, we can calibrate the Eversmart together. I have a calibration slide for the Supreme and Oxygen 2.6.0.
Does anybody know if the cal.slide from the Pro and the Supreme are identical?
@Juergen
I send you a mail, I hope you've got it.

georgl,
I tried to send you a mail. But the mail was rejected. Reason: the user has too much messages on the server.
Please give me a note when your account is ready again.
Shure, I can send you Qxygen 2.6.0. Do you use Dropbox?
Maybe I have a solution for the calibrationslide.
It's finally working! The 1€-Scanner (+transport, Radoc...) is working!
Thank you all, especially Jürgen for OXYgen 2.6 - it's crucial! 2.3.5 does not work with a G5 and FW! No matter what the official pages claim!
But I have a few questions:
- It only goes up to 2540ppi - the Pro II should be 3175ppi, right? Matter of calibration, it seems I have some old calibration data that makes it work, more or less...
- Any advice for cleaning the glass? Acetone is not advised, but even the cleaning alcohol for sensors leaves streaks. I have the cleaning tools from SDS for the drum scanner (wood-free clothes, antistatic, Isopropylalcohol...) but nothing works well!?
- Scanning Ektar makes me crazy, any workflows? I wanted to try ColorNeg but therefore I need Gamma 1.0 - how do I do that?

The resolution dialog box will allow you to type in 3175 dpi, or any other number you want. If you type in more than 3175 dpi there will be interpolation in one direction because the scanner does 8200 dpi X 3175 dpi. That said, if you need the higher resolution it is better to do it when scanning with the Eversmart than later in PS.
You can clean the base glass with window cleaners that do not contain ammonia. For sure do not use acetone on the glass!!

For those who may do a search in the future, I have been looking for the Ratoc firewire converter and have had no luck. I did find a different brand that does work. It's a 2Wave Technologies adapter p/n 102400-1.
I am having an issue however...when booting the computer in OSX I am doing a new fresh install of the oXygen software. The software is going through it's installation and diagnostic pretty normally, but it ends up hanging up with some kind of a motor error that makes the scanner give a very loud high-pitched whining noise. Eventually a warning error to shut down the scanner and restart the scanner and computer comes up.
I have gone through this cycle 3 times now and it hangs up in the exact same place each time.
Wondering what's up.
Anyone?

Hi Michael,
That SCSI to Firewire adapter you mention, 2Wave Technologies adapter p/n 102400-1, is that available from a company?
I thought that it was the original unit Scitex placed into their scanners to move it along with the Firewire connection introduced i the Apple desktop.
If you bought it New, from where did you buy it? I would love to buy one.

I found it on eBay. The company is acutally 2nd Wave Technologies. FWIW I paid about $250 for mine. There was more than one on eBay about 2 weeks ago when I snagged it.
BTW I am running Eversmart Supreme SCSI without Firewire gadgets. oXYgen ver. 2.6.0. Perhaps Eversmart Pro II will do also. I have not tried.
Added: but there is a trick.

Surf,
I'm interested to know what setup you're currently on, that allows you to run SCSI mode on V2.6.0.
What is your OS version you are running on?
Which computer setup (PowerPC G4 or G5), Mac Intel, or Win Tel?
SCSI cable to which SCSI card?
Which SCSI cable?
My Eversmart Pro II came with the "Scitex-installed" SCSI to Firewire adapter, the Microtech 2nd Wave Technologies.
At that point when it WAS running, it ran on OS10.2.8.
At some point, it just stopped working.
The last version of software for the Pro II was Ver. 3.2 or later (don't remember the actual version) that allowed FireWire under OS103.5.
OS10.2.8 was the last version for SCSI.
Currently running on OS10.4.11 with Version 2.6.3 with a Ratoc FRS1X on a PowerPC G4. I would love to move up to a PowerPC G5 or even the Mac Pro Intel based desktop.

H Surf,
As far as I remember for the Eversmart Pro II and any scanners that was still on SCSI, depending on the last software version that Scitex put out that allowed SCSI to be use was on OS10.2.8 Panther (?)
For those scanners that had the Original Scitex installed Firewire Kit, the software went up to Version 2.6.3 for PowerPC on Tiger and Leopard. For Version 2.6.4 which was for the Intel based MACS, I would like to say it would use on Snow Leopard, but I have yet to test that out.
To resolve one of my head alignment, I must have an machine (G4) that would allow Dual Boot of OS9.22 and OS10.411 Tiger or OS10.58 Leopard. That machine would have to be a Dual Processor of at least 1.0ghz....

Hi Evan,
Dual processor 500 MHz or single 733 MHz are also OK.

Its getting harder and harder to find good working older G4. Hence my personal reason to get as late as possible. Starting from the DP 1.0 GHZ processor and up. Not much of a choice, but then again limited supply out there.

Dual processor 500 MHz or single 733 MHz are also OK.

ok.. The Eversmart Pro II arrived. w 2.6.4ES oXygen.
I'm running on a Mac Mini, w 10.6.8.. and all works great.
I haven't figured out a way to read DT raw files yet though. The plugins don't seem to work with Photoshop CS6.
Has anyone gotten DT to work with Intel Mac's?

DT files are regular tif files. You don't need any plugins. You might need to add file extension to get Photoshop to open DT file.
If you want to use DT View profile find it under some of Oxygen sub directories and copy it to right place for Photoshop.
Also if I remember right you need to use DT View output profile in Oxygen to get colors right. My Oxygen suggest something else as default.
I'm running supreme with 2.6.4 on mac pro under 10.6.8 & CS5.
