What 45mm lens?

The only lens in that size range that covers 4x5 that I've heard of is the Schneider Super Angulon XL 47mm f/5.6. It will work on any view camera that allows a short enough bellows draw, but I'm unsure of which Horseman models can be used.

Also, 47mm is VERY short. Many cameras cannot use a lens that short without a recessed lensboard and a wide-angle bellows.

The lens is a Rodenstock 110 APO -Grandagon 1:4.5 f=45mm.

I do have a 40mm recessed lensboard & a bag bellows for my Horseman.

Thanks, Jim

The 45mm Rodenstock Apo Grandagon will work, providing you use a 6x9 roll film back on your 4x5 Horseman.

However, according to the Rodenstock specs., it does not cover 4x5.

Is your lens a 110 or a 45?

A lens board with a 40mm recess? How do you plan on using the shutter controls with in a recess that deep?

I don't know if the lens is a 110 or a 45. I haven't bought it yet. Any idea of the lenes value?

The 40mm lens board is tight. I wish I had the 20mm board instead. I was using the board with a 75mm lens but I found out I could use a flat board instead. To reach the controls is super tight. A small stick works. I have a Gepe - Pro Release Wide Angle Adapter(3") which works great.

The Rodenstock 45mm Apo Grandagon has a 110 degree field angle. That's why the seller included 110 in the description.

The lens is a 45mm Rodenstock Apo Grandagon. Designed for 6x9 or 6x12 medium format, it does not cover 4x5.

Check eBay, for the selling price.

(Presently listed at KEH in EX condition, for $889).

It is a fantastic lens though. Actually you can use it but there willl be noticable vignetting at the corners. With a proper center filter and low contrast film you may minimize this effect. On the other hand You may crop if your composition allows.

Or get a 47mmXL, which covers if you need ultra wide. But think hard before you go this wide. It is very specialized and you really need a center filter, which can add another 300 to the cost. I shoot black and white and generally do not worry about center filters even with my 72XL. But i found that the fall off is so extreme with the 47mm that you cannot ignore it. Unless you like the vignette effect.:-)

You have not sated which Horseman you have. I'm not sure about other models, but with the FA you have to be sure the rear cell of the lens is small enough to actually fit - this can be an issue with large aperture wide angle lenses. I would also be concerned about if the bed can be kept out of the image with such an extreme wide angle lens, even if you drop the bed.

I believe the camera is an L45 - 4x5 view camera.

I have this same lens, and while it does not cover 4x5, it is indeed a very good performer. I have used it on a variety of Sinars with a flat board without a problem. But you do need the WA Bellows 2 to use it properly.

The L45 is a monorail camera (so no problem with the bed). According to this site, http://www.komamura.co.jp/e/L45_sys.html , this camera has Minimum Flange Distance of 60mm (using a wide angle bellows). So you could only go down to a 65mm lens with a flat lens board. You can go down to a 45mm lens with a 20mm recessed lens board but those boards are pretty spendy.

So you will need a wide angle bellows and a 20mm recessed lens board to use a 45mm lens.

The 45mm APO-Grandagon only needs 55.5mm at infinity (see http://www.ebonycamera.com/articles/lenses.html), so a 5mm or 10mm recessed board would work, but a flat one wouldn't.

Last March I bought a new Horseman 40mm recessed lens board from Adorama eBay ($36.00) so I'm all set if I luck out and get this lens.

So you saw the other posts that said this lens does not cover 4x5, right?

Yes. I will use a 120 or 220 roll film holder.
