Ok I got my Camera home finally and I have a lot to do. I have a few questions about backs for this camera. Unfortunately I have a 5x7 back :(, I want an 8x10 back. I am sure many of you know that mess with these cameras the sliding back is made of a few pieces, there is a back inside of a back, inside of a back. The whole unit just pops in with a single clip at the top, inside that unit lives the sliding back, and inside of that lives the 5x7 spring back.
Well it looks like the whole unit has to be replaced, The opening if I remove the 5x7 spring back is not 10" wide, this means I have to find a whole new sliding back. This is a real bummer. I thought I was going to be able to buy just the spring back and fit the pins to the sliding back. I still may be able to do this but it will take some cutting to get the opening correct.
I have been digging around for more than a few weeks, waiting for my camera to arrive hoping I would have the 8x10 back already to go so I can restore this baby. Well luck has not been kind, I am still looking.
Please look at the pictures and tell me if I am wrong. It seems strange to make a 5x7 back smaller than an 8x10 back. It makes too much sense to have a universal rough opening that will take spring backs of various sizes starting with an 8x10, then have inserts for 5x7 and one for 4x5 that fit correctly and use the same pin locations.
I guess nothing will be easy on this one, It's real rough, and need lots of love. Looks like I am also going to have to spend $250 more just to get it to 8x10 grrr. That is if I can ever find the darn thing.
Here is the project and the measurements showing the size of the back
